An L lens is a luxury lens without diffractive optics.
A DO lens is a luxury lens with diffractive optics.

And the DO lens can be made smaller.
And hopefully now also with better out-of-focus capture without strange artifacts.

It's no so much the "L" designation but what diffractive elements do to the IQ. Some people are bothered by the bulls-eye type of bokeh.

But they claim in their posts about the new 400 DO that they have solved that issue now so that they might start rolling out more DO lenses. They have now moved the DO elements closer to the body instead of having them near the front of the lens.

So hopefully getting less flare issues and less "bulls-eye" bokeh as you called it.

That would be great. I would love to see Canon start offering more long lenses at more reasonable prices and sizes.

Hrm. I suspect you might just see smaller/lighter lenses with awful prices

It doesn't look easy to create a DO lens pair with two sawtooth-patterned lens surfaces with precision enough that you can press the two surfaces against each other like two lego pieces.

and lets not forget when was the last time canon released a good lens at a cheap price.

With what i guess are a very very low number of DO lenses sold, I highly doubt canon would put any effort at all in a mkII .

I have been waiting 2 years for this lens. Hope it is finally true. Can't stand the push/pull design of the current version.

from that CR2 is what I would expect canon to do. I wouldn't have expected them to make the lenses F4 at 400mm. If true then I hope they don't expect a ton of cash for it.

I suspect low cost - long lens is the realm of third party manufacturers. The 100-400 has met its match with the Sigma and Tamron 150 - 600's. Both seem to spec out and review to be just as good as the Canon 100-400 with better distance, but neither seem to be able to keep up with demand (Tamron fact Sigma rumor).

Problem for Canon is that if they come out with a 100-400 (or 600) now they will be copy-cats and one of the premier manufacturers can't afford to make that fact, even if they might make a fortune helping to meet demand. I believe the "DO" rumor (or direction) avoids that problem. It will just keep them in the business of creating the excessively expensive, while maintaining reputation as quality builder.

I'm hoping it will be one of the newer super sharp zooms that Canon seems to be doing at the moment, with great weather sealing and an intelligent 2 position IS I'd be very interested. My Tammy 150-600mm doesn't have a panning mode (the Sigma does I gather) and it isn't all that weather proofed. I would think the Canon will be built far better than the Tammy too.
