I have been waiting 2 years for this lens. Hope it is finally true. Can't stand the push/pull design of the current version.

Two years, that's like last week to some of us who've had the "old" one for coming on two decades.

As for the push pull, it would be a shame to lose that feature. This is the BEST feature of this lens, and to want this lens,. and not want to push pull is like wanting a slow Porsche. If you want slow, just get the VW.

The 100-400mm has a lot of room to catch up among today's lenses. It can be weather sealed, it can get better IS, and faster AF, it can be made to be super sharp. All of this would be a plus, but if they ditch the push pull, I am keeping the old one for sure.

I completely agree. I've had several twisty zooms, and hate having to twist the barrel to get the FL to change. I've had a couple of push-pull zooms, and don't even think about the pushing and pulling I do - it's so intuitive that it precludes conscious thought!

Unfortunately, my newest acquisition has a twist zoom. I'm going to have to force myself to get used to that, as there are no push-pull alternatives.

It'll make me sad if the upcoming Canon 100-400 has a twisty zoom. In fact, that would probably be enough of a drawback to keep me from ever buying one.

The tammy has criticism that it doesn't keep up with active subjects as well as people would like. I have also seen criticism about the sigma that the picture lacks...punch.

I wonder if the shorter (and lighter) Canon would be an answer to these criticsms as well.

On the other hand, Canon will be praised or criticized by one group of people which ever the choose to go in regards to the push/pull vs rotating zoom mechanism. I can't remember another issue that polarized people so much on a lens!!

Anyway, until an official release statement, I think that most of us will remain cautious in regards to getting our hopes "up"

I hope and really expect it will have weather sealing, 4 stop IS at least faster AF and be sharp as the recent tele zooms. I am on the fence of how I would react to no push-pull design. Mine stays at 400 most of the time and I have had twist zooms. I found no advantage to either.

I can see some people not being happy with this design.

I've been interested in the new 150-600 Tamron and tested it against my 100-400L and 1.4x converter. Amazingly, even when the Canon image is magnified that little bit to get both images the same size, the images are no different. The Canon might even have the edge in sharpness in the corners.

So I remain very happy with my 100-400.

Not if the replacement is visibly sharper, then all is forgiven.

the push pull doesn't matter to me. but then I don't have that lens in the first place.

if the rumour is true and it's going to be smaller, I wonder if it will be starting at the same price point?

I'm would miss the push/pull, for some reason I seen to really get on with it. Also, the lens full of dust look is so hard to recreate in post!

I am a PP fan.
I too would miss this feature and would have to see some vast improvements in a new twisty lens to otherwise surrender what I have.
