If canon has made this lens compatible and capable of good IQ with teleconverters this could be a homerun.

Well, even the old model has good IQ w/ 1.4x tcon. I think this will make it even better, can't be worse! :)
MFD of ~1m is really nice indeed!

The price is easy to calculate, based on that it will provide 100mm more reach than the 70-300L:

Price of the new 100-400 = (Price of the 70-300L) * 400mm / 300mm = $1932

:D

i saw similar price rumors for the 200-400mm L and they were way off!
Hopefully the lower price is real for those who really want this

it seems like it would be an awkward push pull...the reason the tamron and sigma zooms work as push pulls is because of the large grouping of elements in the front...it gives you something to grab....there's nothing to grab here, aside from the hood maybe

well that link's been wrong already once, saying it would be announced on sept. 5th :)

my guess is $2,799

Looks really similar to the design of the 70-300L. Even the focus/zoom rings are the same. If this new 100-400 is just a big brother of the 70-300L, then as with the 70-300L, the 100-400 might not be able to take Canon TC's. Lets hope not but if the 100-400 II can't take Canon TC's, I think Canon will be shooting itself in the foot and especially if the price is north of $2K.

Why would we need such a zoom? I would go with fix length...

Although it doesn't offer IS, Canon offers the 400 f/5.6L if that is your preference.
