Does anyone know if there's a plugin, either export or publish, for Lightroom to Instagram? I've been looking around and haven't seen anything.

I'm surprised to find out that there's not one on Jeffrey Friedl's site (external link).

Speaking of exporting for Instagram, what are the ideal settings (e.g. resolution, filesize) to maintain best quality on Instagram and prevent any horrible compression?

When I post to instagram, I do one of two things;

Post images taken with my mobile Galaxy S3 after I run them through SnapSeed editor.
Post images from my photography work using a Photo squarer app.

I usually upload my pics to Flickr (1920x1280), then hop on my phone (external link) and download the pic to my phone using the Flickr app (again, 1920x1280), add a white border abd crop to get a 1x1 ratio using Photo Editor (external link)app, then export in Photo Editor to Instagram. Ends up looking like this: http://instagram.com/kiapolo1887 (external link)

instagram does like 3rd parties too much, they took down all the ones that allowed uploads.

There are emulators you can use, such as blue stacks, but there's no direct way from LR or any other PC application to instagram. It has to be through a phone app.

Try to keep the file size under 500kb, when it's big instagram will compress the hell out of it. I "save for web" in photoshop at 72%, 1280 on the long size and they always upload perfectly. Use Squareit on android or squaready on iphone to keep the 3:2 ratio.

I am currently developing such plugin for Lightroom, see:

It is currently in "works on my computer" state, but I should be able to take few beta testers on Mac OS X platform in very near future, contact me if you are interested in trying it out.

If you're using Lr Mobile, you can go 'Open In...' and then choose 'Copy to Instagram'. I suspect that the reason why there isn't a publishing service is because Instagram still doesn't allow submitting images from a computer.

If it a mobile phone image I use Snapseed to edit and then upload with the Instagram app.

If the image is on PC I process with Lightroom and either crop to 1:1 or use LR Mogrify to add boarders during export. The file is exported to my drop box at 1200 on longest side and dropbox automatically syncs it to my phone. From there I post to Inst via the app.

My publisher plugin works around that lack of public APIs by running Android on an emulator or phone connected via USB. It allows direct publishing from Lightroom, multiple photos at a time and the photo tags can also be entered in Lightroom.
