Cardinal Beetle pauses to consider possible take-off point. Good elevation but leaf not springy enough.

This leaf is much better. Beetle starts to open his wings but gets cold feet.

This climb had better be worth it!

Now that's better. This leaf is perfect, it has good elevation and is springy.

Beetle plucks up courage, starts to open his wings and . . .

Denis and Ian, thanks. The beetle in the second shot did actually take-off but my flash failed to fire! I cursed the flash for quite some time. Fortunately, another beetle (his stage look alike) put on an act for me and this time the flash did go off at the crucial moment of take-off!
