You can set Google Voice to screen your forwarded calls.

Are you depending on return customers that will attempt calling on the old number? Do you have advertising that reflects your old number? It's hard to say what to do without knowing what biz you are in.

Right now I am trying to order new business cards, so it would be easy to put a new number. As far as old customers, I am not really expecting too much since I believe they are all aware I left the area.

Then I'd go with a new number.

If my potential client pool is locally based, I'd want a local number.

You say you've advertised for a while with the old number. Well, you have the contact info (or should have it) for clients you've already gotten from that, so you could contact them and let them know about the number change as a "courtesy".

For those who've not contracted you, well, don't worry about them; you can't. As businesses grow, things change, and there's no compelling reason to try to isolate yourself from that.

I don't answer calls from area codes that are unfamiliar to me because they have been telemarketers 100% of the time.

I also tend to have a "hmm that's sketchy" attitude towards numbers that don't match the location. Probably because I spend a little too much time on craigslist and have to watch my back.
