Modified EF-S 10-18 STM on 5D3

I modified my EF-S 10-18 STM last night so it will mount on Full Frame cameras. This just involves unscrewing the plastic lens mount and cutting off the plastic part that extends too far into the mirror box area of the camera lens mount. I glued the pieces back together so that there is not a large opening in the back.

The mirror will hit at 10mm, vignettes badly at 10-13mm, but works jut fine at 14-18mm on a Full frame.

No ideas, but just wanted to say thanks for sharing your findings!

lol, why even bother with this and not just buy a UWA made for FF in the first place.

I have an Samyang 14mm that I am very happy with but I like the idea of a nice compact alternative that also has Image Stabilization. Since I already own both lenses, I thought it would be fun to try it out.

Because it's 60% less than the cheapst FF lens canon offers and 20% wider? Oh, and canon doesn't offer a FF UWA with IS?

Thanks Mike, for 1. doing this experiment. 2. reporting your results/issues.

While many just have that need to just ask "why", some actually try things, and this is how many great things/inventions are stumbled upon.

I love playing/modding things as well.. i just can't afford to anymore.

Keep up the good work, Mike.. and i hope you find out what the issue with the 5D3 is.. and find a workaround!

Canon does actually -- Canon 16-35mm f/4L IS USM. Agreed that the 10-18 is much cheaper though, if a bit less versatile.

I don't think there ever will be a workaround. I am Okay with that though because LiveView AF still works and I find it easy enough to Manual Focus just using the viewfinder.

Think over to purchase crop camera with this lens.

do you have more photos? those forrest shots dont really even look like wide angle shots.
i guess it shows that it vignettes a lot and too blurry in the corners to be useful.
also, do you have the link to bright color's thread about working it with 6d?

I haven't really taken any photos other than to test the vignetting with and without a filter.

Here are a some quick snaps from today. I intentionally included the sun and it seemed to handle the flare quite well.

8 more quick jpeg snaps from in front of my house today with a 67mm Hoya HD CPL. You can see some extra vignetting in the corners from the CPL.

How messy does it get to do this mod? I have a crop camera and 6d so I'd like to switch it from time to time. Also I don't have a wide angle for my crop camera nor my 6d so this lens and mod could be a real option.
