Hi All,
Another hobbyist here asking advice.

Just received this email through flickr mail.

I’m a photo editor at Yahoo/Flickr and we love your photo! We included it in a gallery on Flickr and we're considering using it to highlight the gallery on the Yahoo network, including social media channels. Could we please have your permission to do so? Should your photo be selected, you will receive photographer credit wherever it’s used, when technically possible.

Now of course it's always nice to have someone appreciate an image(remember I'm a hobbyist not a pro), but it would also be fantastic if someone wished to purchase an image at some point in my life. Now I'm under no illusions here, that if I state they can use it for a fee, they will just move along to the next image.
Back to the other side of the coin and that is I'd be a little chuffed if they did use it. Simple folk simple pleasures.

So the question I need to answer myself is am I happy to just let it get out there(maybe) for what will more than likely be credit or lack thereof.
"when technically possible." That bit made me laugh.

So after some thoughts from you guys/gals to swing me whichever way, or just general thoughts.

Thanks all

I'm really a hobbyist too, but I would NOT allow my images to be used for "photographer credit" unless I feel the organization/site is worth it. In this case, I would pass....but that's just me.

So when is it technically impossible? Ask them to cite instances of that occurring.

I'd pass, too. Yahoo has certainly the wherewithal to purchase licences.

They want to earn money from your photo by using it to promote their business. The image will be seen by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. The cost of licensing an image for that sort of usage could and should be substantial - so you would be giving away a lot while they earn money from your image. I'd pass.

I'd bite, unless you're actively selling that image as a print or something that would devalue it elsewhere. Yes, Yahoo! has money, but chances are the person scraping through those images doesn't have a budget allocated, and they never will.

With how Google works in 2014, it's probably worth a few hundred bucks to have the word "photo" and your name on the same line on a high-traffic, well-respected page. That's how Google determines what is important in search results and search suggestions. If you were to get not just a mention, but a link to your page, that could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

I'd suggest asking them to link your credited name to your portfolio page.

Another big name organisation trawling the internet for freebies they can well afford to pay. Imagine the fuss they would make if they found out people were not paying for their services. Do you think those people could just say "I'll try to give you credit whenever possible" and they'd be happy. No chance.
Big names are trading on people's vanity ( no offence meant to you ) and we ( yes I've been there and done it ) are falling for it. They're laughing all the way to the bank. What will happen is they will use you photo for their business purposes, and you will never see any money or credit for your work..........

And if you don't give them permission for your photo, they have already sent the same message to 100 other people, many of whom will wet their pants with excitement to have a major company use their pics.

If they want to be played for suckers, I'd let them but no way I'd be a part of being screwd over by big business.

If you are fine with your photo being used for no real gain, go for it.

In an ideal world, everyone would make the same stand & decide that their images won't be used without fair remuneration to avoid devaluing the business of photography. In the real world though, if you decide to not give consent, they'll just use another person's photo for free anyways.

I would just be happy that they actually asked you for permission & respected whatever your wishes were.

To be fair, I think nearly any business or person would opt to pay nothing for anything they could if it was a legal option.
