EW-83DII Hood on EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens

I just received a new EW-83DII hood to use on my 16-35 f/2.8L lens. The hood didn't want to go on at first, so I took it into my shop and made some slight modifications to the "thread" area on the hood.

If anybody else wants to use the same hood/lens combination (which works great, now that it fits), let me know and I can describe the minor surgery that was necessary to make the hood fit properly.

The EW-83DII hood is significantly narrower than the original EW-83E supplied with the 16-35 lens, but does not vignette at all on my 20D. With the new hood, dropping the lens into my bag (a Lowepro Stealth Reporter AW 650) will be a lot easier.

I wonder what the difference is between the 16-35 and 17-40 _ it (EW-83DII) fits my lens snuggly but not a problem at all and yes slides right into my Lowepro 4AW.

There was a definite difference in the two hoods' "threaded" areas. The new hood had a little material in two places where there was none in the original hood. That material just made the hood very tight on my lens. Less than a minute's work with an Exacto knife solved the problem.

Skip - I've just found this thread. I received my EF 16-35mm f/2.8L, EW-83DII hood and, for that matter, Stealth Reporter D650AW today. I think we're now using almost identical kit (20D, BG-E2, my other lenses are the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS, also I have a 580EX flash).

If you can describe the hood surgery, that would be helpful. My patient awaits - the EW-83DII is awfully tight without modification.

By the way - if you ever posted pictures of how you'd laid out your Stealth Reporter inside, can you point me to the thread, please. I've had a go, and think I'm nearly there, but not quite.

David

David, since I didn't photograph the EW-83DII hood's mounting area prior to the surgery, it would be less than useful to photograph it now.

If you compare the original hood to the new one, you will see the difference - and what I had to cut away.

Hold the hood with your thumbs holding the mounting ring from the inside, petals facing away from you, the red dot and the red circle equal distance from the top, and the "JAPAN" text on top. Your thumbs will be virtually touching the two parts that need the surgery.

Compare the new hood to the original and what you need to cut will be rather obvious. Just cut away the little ramps that are between the "screw threads" so that those areas look like the original hood.

Why Skip, TY. I have been using 83DII hood on my 17-40 without incident. Like others, I just traded up (or rather my employer traded up) to 16-35, and even though the 17-40 and 16-35 use the same 83E hood, the 83DII does not fit the 16-35.

So, I followed this old post, stuck my thumbs out, and it looks like the 83E is simply notched deeper at the initial contact point? So, you just cut a deeper wider notch at this point place in the 83DII?

What tool did you use? Small file or Dremel or razor knife?

Thanks,
Jack

I used an X-Acto knife to remove most of the raised portion between the two "threads" at the two points I tried to indicate in my last post. That's what was needed for a smooth installation on my 16-35.

Hi, Skip. I had a hard time getting the EW-83D on my lens at first, but it eventually became easier to take on and off. I have no problem with it now. As a matter of fact, I'm worried that I may wear down the threading to the point where it becomes too loose and easily removed.

Lord_Malone - I know what you mean - often reviving old threads is less than helpful. In this case I revived an old thread because the question was exactly the one I had and I guessed Skip's offer of an answer was still open. I though someone as active in the forums as Skip would notice the thread when I posted to it. If he didn't I was going to PM him today to draw his attention to it.

Skip - I thought it would be those 'ramps' - there's something more like inserted spacers in those locations on the EW-83E hood. My hood is loosening up, so I may just leave it, but if not, you confirmed where to cut.

I think I've cracked the Stealth Reporter layout for my gear, too. It's amazing how the big bag fills up when you start throwing in things like chargers and laptop cables. I'll stick to my Toploader 75AW for taking a portion of my kit around when I'm using it, but the Stealth Reporter will be great for storing all the kit and taking the whole lot with me on holiday or similar.

Hopefully I'll get the chance to give the new 16-35mm a good work-out in the next two days.

David
