Both images are well taken. The second image a split second too late.

The first is a great portrait. Consider cropping it vertically.

That first one is exceptional. Frankly, I would keep the horizontal crop but just crop it a bit tighter vertically, and place him a bit further to the right in the frame. Kind of like this....
