Hey guys

New here. I came to the forums in search of info on the 2 lenses stated in the title. I am wanting to buy either tthe Samyang 10mm 2.8 or the Samyang 16mm 2.0 for my Canon EOS 20D, an older APS-C censor camera. I have read nothing but great reviews about these lenses, but I have not seen too many personal reviews or posts on these lenses. Does anyone here have any personal experience with either of these lenses? The kind of shooting I will be doing is landscape, milkyway and starscape type stuff, and wide angle "macro" type shots. I live in Peru and will be ordering from the states, so I want to make sure I get it right the first time because returning things and dealing with problems is not really an option for me. No one in Peru sells these 2 lenses so I am stuck with this option. B&H is my most comfortable option I think. I have also looked at many of the other wide angle and super wide angle lenses available for the APS-C sensor, but I am just not that interested. I prefer the prime lense with the manual focus. Any 'reviews' would be awesome.. If anyone here has any.

Thanks a bunch!

Josh

Bnh does international shipping? I don't think the 16mm would be wide enough for Milky Way unless you stitch the photos together later. What's a wide angle macro shot?
There is also the canon 10-18mm which is affordable for aps-c. Samyang 10mm sounds great for Milky Way. Maybe stop it down to about f4 and you will get sharp stars.
I know that on full frame the samyang 14mm f2.8 is great for Milky Way and so I would think the 10mm will be good just as well.

I'd get the 16mm for the faster aperture. With the 8mp 20D sensor you'd get better results combining exposures anyway, so go with the faster lens ;)

Message member; "NCHANT" and check out his work in this thread, you'll see that exposure blending is awesome for astro work

Also consider samyang 12mm f2.0 on mirrorless

The 12mm is fantastic, but OP is shooting with a 20D.

Yeah I saw the Samyang 12mm and I really liked it, but they only make it for mirrorless! I was thinking about maybe switching the mount so it would fit the 20D, but the censor wouldn't be compatible with the lense I don't think. The 12mm is exactly what I was looking for and it accepts filter. Back to trying to decide if I want to go with the 10mm or 16mm. I like that the 16mm accepts filters, but I like the wider field of view that the 10mm offers. Unfortunately, the 10mm does not accept filters. One question... How is stitching panoramas together with a super wide angle lense?? The 10mm is equivalent to a 16mm if I remember corectly... How does the distortion affect stithing the panorama together? I shoot a lot of panoramas, so this may be a deciding factor.

pkim1230, yes, B&H does ship internationally and wide angle macro shots (technically not macro) is essentially super close up shots of a subject while still getting the surroundings in the image. Not sure if that is a real term, but an old professional photographer told me about this style of shooting. Examples

The 10mm would be better for the wide angle macro type stuff and would also be great for landscape portraits, but the 16mm would be better for star photography with the faster aperture and would stitch panoramas together very well which would make up for the loss in field of view. Decisions decisions... What would you guys go for??

The 16mm is definitely less distortion compared to 10mm, so I wouldn't worry about distortion when stitching. But I've never stitched before so I don't know. Also, you wouldn't really need to stitch panoramas if you're already using a wide angle like 10mm.
I think f2.8 is a standard for astrophotography. f2.0 doesn't have to be the deciding factor.
