Okay, so, this is an emergency, guys.

I pretty much just had my mind blown by the Nikon D610's dynamic range. I was about to pick up a 6D, but now I'm thinking about cheating on Canon. :S

Give me a reason not to? Help me remain rational!

I wouldn't debate which camera is better, but in my opinion if you try a 6d and it doesn't do it for you the way the nikon has when you tried it, likely you will always itch to move. Looking at your kit, it is nice, but your not massively invested in gear either. I would say you could sell your 24-70 for a nikon 24-70 and the tammy for a tammy.

As I said, which camera is better is not really important here, more what makes you happy. If your a bit of a gadget head (like I am) you may never settle unless you do the switch

Because dynamic range is something you never realised you didn't have enough of until someone said you could have a little more?

Because working a bit harder to achieve great results makes you a better photographer?

Because how ever much you think the grass is greener on the other side, it rarely is? And if it really is, it's not just dynamic range that makes it look greener, it's a lot of other things as well.

Because if you're really jumping ship, you should go the whole hog and get the D800/810?

I think you need to look up the definition of 'emergency'.

Go for it. You like it. It's just a camera. If loyalty to a brand is the only reason keeping you, your switch is within the statistical range canon/ Nikon are aware of and depend on.

Get an A7r and you can continue to use your existing lens and still get that great DR. Best of both worlds.

Can't give you any reasons to stay. If you like the Nikon D610, go for it. Nikon makes great cameras. Never understood the fan boy state where people are so loyal (and blind in many cases) that they would never give another brand even a second look (even though they may have never even tried that brand of camera). Love Nikon. Just like I love Canon, Sony, Pentax, etc.

Just get one of the Nikon D800 series cameras instead and tell yourself it's really the Canon 1ds miv in disguise. You won't really be satisfied until you get a D800 anyways.

To be honest though, until someone gets ahold of one of the files produced by one of the newer Sony sensors that Nikon is using they can't really appreciate how far behind Canon has been left in the tech wars. And don't expect anything other than new rebels and a prosumer body with minor upgrades in the near future from Canon. If Canon really had anything revolutionary coming in regards to a new sensor some news would have leaked by now.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

Get the A7, far cheaper than 610, get same sensor performance, and with an adapter can use all your Canon gear.

There are so many factors that go into your decision and more info will be incredibly helpful in making your decision. What do you mainly shoot? Are you a professional wedding photographer? Architectural? Landscape? Portraits? Do you sell landscape? Do you shoot as a hobby?

I had the same dilemma as you and I actually shoot just about everything. Mainly Architectural but also weddings, product, portraits and so on. In the end, the only real advantage of the D600/610 was the fact that I could push the shadows and highlights a bit more than my 6D, which is absolutely no slouch. I push and pull my 6D and have yet to come to a situation where it couldn't handle it. My buddy has a D800 and sent me a few raw files to play with. Yes, the DR is amazing but I'd only really be able to fully take advantage of the DR in very, very few circumstances. Also, the fact that nearly every one of my Photographer friends shoots Canon means I'd always have a plethora of lenses and other accessories to borrow and use.

You need to figure out if extra stop or so of DR is worth switching. You might also consider that Canon may or may not come out with a better sensor in the near future and, if they do, you'll be in the same dilemma as you are now.

In regards to the OP: GAS doesn't improve your photography skills. I take the benchmarks of the latest cameras with a grain of salt. Comparing final IQ with either brand camera seems pretty close. Nikons might have a slight advantage with DR and resolution, but it's not so drastic that you shouldn't worry about proper exposure and focusing.
