Pied-billed Grebes

One posed nice and close, but the interesting ones were much farther away. I did get within 10 feet of the brood, but all 10 of them were full of cattails.

Great stuff! These birds are so cute anyway, and the little ones are adorable! Great to see some shots of a whole family like this.

Thanks. I don't think any of the other grebe chicks are this colorful, at least in North America. These will show a faint pattern well into their first winter.

Thanks. I wish I could have been a bit closer. The nest was in some very dense cattails right by the trail, but she took them straight out to the middle of the pond and back.

Awesome series KD. We also have a nest here but it is covered almost by the waterlilies. You can see the heads of the babies pops out sometimes.
