Yeah, I did read your post, and yes, I still think it's hyperbole. I've seen files from the D800 (one of my best friends has one), the resolution is pretty cool, but it's not something that's necessary for the vast majority of shooters.

I agree with you. I really think D800/810 is great for Landscapes

I think you answered your question. There's no reason that Canon has to respond to anything since the 5D3 is a much more versatile camera. Not everyone shoots landscapes or or studio and you'll be hard pressed to find the d800 used in a fast action sporting environment, yet the 5D3 pairs with the 1DX perfectly for pretty much every genre of shooting.

I dont think canon need to answer anything. 90% of reviews top it out as the best dslr ever. There are a percentage of shooters here who complain about it's dynamic range etc and while this may be a valid point it seems it is only an issue for a very small percentage of actual users. Its a small percentage on potn and I am sure that potn is probably only 1% of canon users.

I think for the majority of users noise and speed and focus are some of the major points. The 5d is great here, but the d800 is also, and from trying it would say its only letdown is the 4fps, if that concerns you. Sure it doesn't have a focus system as hyped or configurable as the 5d, but it is still great. I also think that the big files is not as big a deal for some as others, or indeed it is becoming less of an issue as storage gets cheaper and processors get better.

Indeed i would say the iso gap between the two models isn't as wide as often said. yes, the 5d is cleaner, but if you process a raw file and save both at required print size at say 3600 pixels by 2400 pixels for a 12 x 8, it be hard to tell which camera took which at iso 6400.

Both have strengths, bith have weaknesses, but to be fair both are great

When the 5DM3 came out, I changed from Nikon to Canon after shooting Nikon for 50 years. It was simply a better all-around camera based on the independent reviews I read. Unless you want to do large portraits and landscapes, I still think it is the better camera compared to the D810. Having said that, I think Canon will respond to the D810 with a 5DM4 or similar camera that incorporates higher dynamic range, a somewhat larger pixel count (26-28 mp), the 70D's new phase contrast focusing system and built-in WiFi. When used with Magic Lantern, the 5DM3 can already roughly match the D810's dynamic range (14 bits vs. 14.7 bits). The big question is will Canon incorporate 4K video at up to 60 fps. I think Canon will also introduce a mirrorless camera in 2015 to compete with the Sony a7/a7R along with some adapters for EF and perhaps EF-S lenses and perhaps a new native mount and a few lenses just as Sony has done. Remember, it was Nikon that lagged behind Canon for a dozen years. Canon has the resources to match anything that Nikon has in their bag of tricks. Expect these two titans and Sony to duke it out in several market segments.

In the end though... why does it matter? The 5Diii is an amazing camera, it's no less amazing just because another camera came out from another manufacturer.

And vice versa.

And vice versa.

Question was not if 5D is better or not, it is "How will Canon respond to Nikon's D810?"

And probably answer is, that is if Canon has not changed his long lasting policies:
By silence and then through better marketing techniques silently but profoundly noticeably.
