I am forced to sell some of my gear to pay for medical bills. I have the Canon 17-40L and the 24-105L. I have enjoyed having both, but one must go. I shoot mostly landscapes and both have had their place. I also have a Canon 70-200/4L IS. I've had no trouble parting with other lenses, but these two are giving me a headache. By the way, the 17-40 just came back from Canon after a cleaning and calibration. Sharp as a tack now. I'm using a 6D. HELP

I'd let go of the 24-105. I'll keep the 17-40 + 70-200 combo and add a 50 eventually.

Which lens do you use more? That is the one I would keep. In my case, the 24-105L gets used more than any other lens I own, so it would be the last one I would give up.

I would be inclined to keep the 24-105 just because (I think) it is a far more useful all around lens on a 6D. Unfortunately, your 17-40 probably won't be worth more than $600 at the VERY most (and more likely $500 IMHO). If cold hard cash is the issue, sell the 6D and the 24-105 and pick up a gently used crop camera to use with the 17-40.

My initial thought was: Keep the 24-105, but after a bit of thought and seeing you have a 70-200, keep the 17-40. It'll make a great companion to the 70-200. Pick up a 50 1.8 or 1.4 (the Sigma 1.4 is excellent) and you have a very versatile kit.

I like wide angle perspective...so my vote goes to keeping the 17-40L

I'd say the 24-105 is more of an all rounder, so say sell the 17-40, plus when funds allow it gives you the excuse to buy a 16-35 f4 :)

I think an important consideration is whether you shoot your landscapes handheld or via tripod. If a tripod is used, you 17-40 makes more sense. If handheld - it is hard to beat the 24-105's image stabilization.

Keep the 17-40!

For landscapes the 17-24 range could be very important. Sure you can shoot panos but you need to have some time to do one. The gap between 40 and 70 with the two lenses is like nothing. With the 24-105 you do have a big overlap with your current 70-200. I wouldn't even think about it.

Really what matters to you. Which do you use more?

I had both. Loved the 17-40 but something had to go and it was the 17-40.

Now is a good time to sell the 17-40. The more people buy the 16-35 f/4 IS , the more the price used of the 17-40 is going to be driven now. Sell it now while you can still get a good price.

That being said, the price of the 24-105 keeps getting driven down into the $650 17-40 territory as well by Canon's refurb sales.

You will probably get the same price for each lens.
