The issue with the 70D is something wrong in the autofocus system when using the viewfinder. In live view everything is fine. The 70D might use the same viewfinder focusing system design as the 7D, but still the physical construction and firmware are probably different anyway.

It seems that SOME of the 70Ds have a big problem in this department. It is definitely not user error, as some people reporting the problem are professional photographers with years of experience. However, don't let that put you off if you are interested in the camera. The internet makes it look really bad, but in reality the bodies with the problem are most probably only a small percentage of what was produced. People come to forums to complain or ask for help with their issues. People who have everything working pefectly fine don't usually come to rave on about their stuff. They're busy taking photos :)

As long as you buy from a good dealer (ideally local to you to make returns easier), then it is very easy to take the camera home and do the little test which you can find on a few sites, for the focusing issue. You have a fast lens to do this with (the 50mm) so if you get one of the bad bodies you can just take it back. I actually risked it from eBay as I didn't know about the issue until I got my 70D! Luckily it is all fine and perfectly sharp both in live view and viewfinder.

If you are in the US, you can get a 7D for $720 with a 1 year warranty. :)

I had 4+ 7Ds with no AF issues using Canon USM lenses, some Sigma lenses in AI servo "twitch" and lose focus, but that is common to the lenses and not the body. Until the 70D comes down to the $700-800 range, I would always consider the 7D first. This should happen in about 1 year.

Both bodies are a cracking camera so it depends how much you value the video aspect and the vari angle touch screen. I really liked how the vari-angle screen made creative angle shooting much easier, which is the primary reason why I swayed to the 70D side.

You can't go wrong with either camera though (assuming you don't get a bad 70D as described earlier)

I had a 7D - Loved it, but I want something that shoots better Video - So I am going to pick up a 70D locally from the money I got from my 7D - My 7D had about 70K actions anyways. I loved the 7d and as many have stated I really dont think you can go wrong with either body.

The 7D will be easier to use. It and the 5D3 are the easiest Canon DSLRS to use imo. Canon got rid of the joystick on the XXD models when they released the 60D. I promise you'll find that really annoying.
