Logic dictates that the needs of the many outweigh... nevermind.

While I thoroughly enjoy the IS on my wider lenses, traditional wisdom is "the longer the lens the more it needs IS". I expect IS versions of the 50, 85, 400, and 135 by this time next year.

i don't know...considering this is supposedly the year of the lens, and canon hasn't introduced much, i doubt they'd manage to replace 4 lenses with IS versions within the next year.

"Over the last few days I have received a lot of hints that a new EF 50mm lens is coming down the pipeline. There are even reports of people shooting with the new lens and that it may have appeared on an updated Canon price list (I would love to see the price list). The retail price is said to be $849 on an “EF 50 f/1.4 II”.

We recently reported that an IS version of the focal length exists in prototype form. It’s pretty normal to have multiple versions of a lens.

There’s always a risk with price lists and typos, and we have seen a lens appear on a price list before it was announced. The announcement came 6 months later, so this may not be an imminent thing. The good news is that there is a lot of chatter about the focal length going around."

How does 'logic' skip the 85 f/1.8 and 100 f/2? I don't think Mr. Spock would agree with you.

Allow me to elaborate :-)

50mm because there is no other offering from Canon for 50mm. Canon needs to have a better release in 50mm segment rather than having IS in another other focal length. If and when they replace 50mm (just like 35mm F2 IS), all they can do is to add a IS with slightly better optics.....history repeats. I can't think of any other way they can differentiate their product / show value. Why 135mm, it needs it more than the shorter focal lengths....and time and again people have asked for it (I know you can search internet for information).

why not 85mm / 100mm f2. The 100mm as it is very small in in terms of market so why bother that. 85mm yes they can but the current one is fairly strong contender and there has to be a 'business reason' for Canon to replace it. What jergen said in three post before.

550D gripped I Sigma 50mm F1.4 (Non Art) I Canon 100mm F2.0 I Nissin Di622 Mk II I YN 622C triggers I...and few other accessories

what kind of light are you constantly shooting in that you can't get faster shutter speeds than 1/50?

Who said anything about 1/50?

I don't get the question. I shoot in very very low light, but handheld in fairly hectic environments. Fairly stationary subjects, but I am not steady. For a longish lens like an 85mm I do not like super thin DOF. I'd much rather shoot at f2 than 1.4 or 1.8.

I think they would put IS in a 50mm before an 85mm.

I think you may be right. Given the new sigma 50 art lens the only way canon is going to stand out in the 50mm market is to be the first with IS.

you said you don't use your 50mm f1.4 because of it's lack of IS...the only time the lack of IS would matter is if you are shooting below 1/50

No, that's a guide line, and an old one from film days before 24 meg sensors. I'm lucky to get 1/125 even decent with a 50mm. And "sharp" is more like 1/250.

Abilities vary in the real world. At 56 I'm not steady like I was, but even at 30 I could never get away with 1/focal length.

They make IS for people like me.

and going on 70 me too! I'll buy Canon if they make a 50 1.4 IS that's built like the 24 and 35 IS I have.

^hopefully the new 50mm 1.4 would be a worthy competitor to the sigma 50mm 1.4 art, though i'm afraid the latter is in a different class, however they both seem to be at the same price point.

Heya,

I have 2 85mm prime lenses. One has autofocus. One is fully manual. The EF 85 F1.8 and the Samyang 85 F1.4. I've yet to feel the need for IS at all. I use them for action or portraits, neither of which really allow IS to do anything for me because I'm always pushing shutter speeds to be fast enough to either synch with a flash, stop motion blur, etc, so really, no reason for IS for me here, other than maybe the viewfinder stabilization, but I really don't need that on 85mm because it's just not long enough for me to feel like it matters (it matters on my 600mm, where it really does help with viewfinder stabilization).

Very best,

Many people fail to realise IS is next to useless with a moving subject.

I'd gladly welcome a 50 f/1.4 or f/1.8 IS and an 85 f/1.8 IS. I'd probably sell my L primes and make the switch to the 28 f/2.8 IS, 35 f/2 IS, 50 f/whatever IS, and 85 f/1.8 IS if they came out with those lenses.

What you gents fail to realize is that others may shoot different subjects and have different levels of steadiness than you do. Imagining other people's needs and empathizing with their situation is a much more difficult skill than selecting the "right" shutter speed.
