HostGator (external link) is the web host I've used for many years. They're having a 75% off sale until 11:59pm CST Sunday 27th. Sale link here (external link).

As an aside, I use NameCheap (external link) for domain registration.

NB: it's 75% off your first payment, so I suggest paying for 6 months or more in a go. They have a money back guarantee so it's low risk.

NB: The second link is an affiliate link, basically buying me a beer for the tip. If you can't see the link, which some browsers hide, oh well.

https://www.google.com …=ssl#q=hostgator+problems (external link)

I recently migrated away from hostgator after years of service. While once the absolute best host on the web, since their takeover by EIG (a company with a historically bad reputation), hostgator has since become a bad host. Almost everybody I know in other forums and such are running from hostgator as fast as their feet can move.

Since their takeover by EIG I have suffered thru many long-term outages in EIG's Provo Data Center not to mention the servers I have been on were RBL'ed so many times I lost count (which interrupts email). EIG is now reportedly overloading servers.

In the google search above, the Yoast article is especially important. For those who do not know Yoast, they are recognized as probably the most knowledgeable, authoritative source of Wordpress SEO out there. Yoast says to avoid hostgator.

For the record, I migrated to Stablehost. I did extensive research plus questioned both their sales and support teams and discovered they were rated in the top three hosts online. The cpanel to cpanel migration was seamless, and done by stablehost for free. The only thing I had to do was change DNS with my registrar and I was off and running on a MUCH better host.

I have had a non-photo website with HostGator for a couple years and have no problems that I'm aware of. I have a very simple site with no bells or whistles, I don't even understand what most of the Yoast article is talking about, so YMMV. HG has always had great 24/7 support when I've had a question.
I chose them after doing lengthy research about hosts and they fit the bill for me. I also used NameCheap.

Do you monitor your site's uptime?

If not, how would you know your provider's quality of service re: reliability?

There are plenty of free services that will do this and send reports in real time. I've used Pingdom with success.

I find HostGator great, never had a problem. When you host 9 million domains you'll always be able to find someone with a bad story, though who knows how many are true.

I don't, and there are probably plenty of things that can go wrong with a website that I am not aware of.

That's not to say I'm recommending HG (I'm not website host savvy enough for my recommendation to carry any weight) just saying I have no intention of changing. My research showed them to have a pretty good reputation in late '12, when I signed up. I will probably monitor things much more closely in the future because I just redesigned my pages but haven't put up the new one yet. Up until now it was so bad I actually hoped people wouldn't go there.

HG was okay for me but for media rich site you want VPS at least; but at that point there are many better hosts out there. I moved from HG to WiredTree's VPS after few years. Plus the bad part about HG as of late is the wait time. It's just gotten longer with response time.

If you want a cheap/simple host, yes HG and many non-VPS/dedicated is the way to go. But if you want better & faster support (even though HG is professional), speed, more bang for your buck then I'd go elsewhere.

I run a site that used to get 2M hits a month (300K of them web pages running mysql queries) on their $10 plan. Worked well.

I've been with Hostgator for about 6 years now .
Always liked it, never had any issues ......
Until they moved me to Their Provost data center!

Read some reviews, not just the first two either, read lots and then
make your decision.

There are hosts out there offering services for $3.00/mth but remember, you get what you pay for!

Does anyone know if you can renew host gator using the 75% off?

I got mine 2 years ago on black friday so im wondering if they will auto renew on me this coming black friday or if Ill have a chance to sign up under their discount again. I will probably buy 1 month at regular pricing so it wont auto at full price just in case.

Nope, you can never renew with a special, new users/domains only.

A whole new website more like, they won't let you register with a URL they've hosted before.
