I know it's probably be asked and answered a 100 x. Been searching but not finding.

Is a skywatcher ED80 on a EQ3 with goto upgrade going to do what I want?
Will this carry a 60D or do I really need a EQ5

I can get the above gear for $1800 Aussie dollars

I think you'd be leading yourself into frustration with an ED80 on an EQ3. The ED80 is a great scope but I think you'd get far more out of putting more of your budget into the mount than the optics.
If that's your budget area and want new, I'd probably go for an EQ5-Pro with goto ($999 at Bintel) and put your name on the list for an AT72ED refractor (US$399). That leaves you a bit for a flattener/reducer and other bits'n'pieces.
Alternatively, join the IceInSpace forum and watch the classifieds there. You should be able to pick up a used ED80 and a heavier mount still, for about the same $$.

Steve.

So EQ5 and above. Will see what I can find.
Not much for waiting on 2nd hand gear. I like new and I want it when I want it :)
Thanks for the input Steve

Was advised by astronomer who makes high end telescopes and 50 years in astronomy/astrophotography that the EQ3 will be fine for ED80 with 40 or 60D. Let's hope he's right. I purchased last night. Will upgrade later if required. Easier to upgrade later than get permission for higher spend today.
