I currently have a Canon 70-200 f4L (non IS) and love it. There are occasions, however, when I could use a faster lens than f4 as well as stabilization so have been thinking about upgrading. The Canon 70-200 f2.8l IS ii is out of the question budget wise, so from what I've been reading my 2 best choices would be a used first generation Canon or a new Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di VC USD.

From reviews I've read I'm leaning toward the Tamron. One of the things I'll be doing with it is shooting sports, so I'm wondering how the autofocus on this lens stacks up for action shots.

Tamron VC model is freaking amazing for the price. No regrets.

This didn't get many replies. I'm curious how the focus speed matches that if the canon 70-200 IS version one for sport applications?

Well, I've had the Tamron 70-200 Di VC f2.8 for a couple of months now, it's a great lens. The autofocus speed is, IMO, on par with the Canon 70-200 f4L which I previously had.
