What's your technique on getting the correct white balance when shooting motorsport?

I've just covered an event and as usual the camera was set to AWB. This is generally fine, but there are noticeable differences between shots. Say I shoot the cars coming towards me, then I turn the camera to the left as they hurtle past.. the angle between the sunlight and camera can be changing rapidly.

Or if I move position between laps to get a different viewpoint of the vehicles, the light angles change again. Or maybe the cloud has rolled in briefly between laps.. etc. All of which lead to slight WB changes.

I do shoot in RAW and appreciate this can be changed reasonably quickly, but I did wonder if there was another way to shoot which would save time editing.

So is it best to shoot with AWB and correct later?

Changing angle shouldn't change WB. The sun remains the sun. A passing cloud might change things as it will act as a light modifier. But whenever I need to get the WB just right I shoot a gray card first and set the temperature from there, take the camera off of AWB and set it manually. I don't do this much anymore as I too shoot raw and adjust in post.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

AWB works 99.9% of the time in the day and 99% of the time at night, for me.

With a few minor adjustments it's been fine for me too, but it is good to know I'm doing the right thing :)

I've found the 5D2's Auto WB to be quite inconstant - This was a while ago now. I tend to set it manually.
