This was the only brown bird among a dozen or more blackbirds (black). He/She stood out quite a lot for being brown all over, although on the wings there were areas of darker brown.

Is this a Rusty Blackbird? Or? Thank you!!

Thank you all very much for the kind remarks!! Having seen (and drooled) over so many of your images, your encouragement is, well....encouraging!

2n10 thank you for the id. Although it wasn't in the company of common grackles (at least not male common grackles), your id gave me a place to begin a better search of my own. I have learned that the thick bill does indeed indicate it's a grackle and not a blackbird, and I found one other photo of similar size and coloring that was identified as an immature common grackle.

Thank you all! What a great community this is to learn photography and birding :-)

I was going to say that but it's such an odd color, the beak is very close but it's missing that natural "mean" look they have and no irredesence at all. Still tis a real nice shot.

Nice shot. I took a photo of a juvenile Common Grackle in a similar pose.

SJC, would you please post your pic, here? Was it this same coloring?
Bret has me thinking a little more. Also, my thoughts Keep returning to the fact that it wasn't in the company of the very iridescent common grackles that also frequent my yard, but with blackbirds.
Thank you!

Quote from a birding website:Common Grackle
Immature
Overall dull, dark brown
Straight, pointed, and heavy dark bill
Pale brown iris becoming yellow as bird approaches adulthood

From the same website:
Common Grackle
Adult female
Smaller, browner, and less iridescent than male
Dark brown overall, often with darker hood
Yellow eye

Here is my photo, not great lighting. Hope this helps.

This is a Rusty Blackbird that I photographed earlier this year.

Thank you, SJC! That's a beautiful shot of your Rusty, by the way.
I'm still a little perplexed - it doesn't seem a lot like either of the birds you posted.
???

Thank you, Butterfly2937!!

Thank you Janet. I got help here identifying the Rusty Blackbird!

Between the "All about Birds" website description, and the beak and eye color, I think it's a dead ringer for the Common Grackle. I had a lot of them that were brownish, and they do show up with the Red Winged Blackbirds quite frequently.
