Sometimes I see a photo that makes me think, I wanna hang up my camera and find another captivating activity like...eerrrrm... praps... tiddleywinks. This is one of those images. Very nice indeed.

Hey Chris,I know how you feel. I was in the same spot about a year ago and I even sold my camera and the gear.My photo mojo was totally dead.I didn't owned a camera for about 4 months or so.For me that was the time,when I realized,I can't go on without it.So I bought 6D and some lenses.I'm glad I did,cause I'm loving it. (Sorry about my poor english).

So, I thought I'd try this route.....

After reading dozens and dozens of 6D reviews/blogs and watching YouTube videos, my mind is a muddied as ever. I don't think I've ever seen a camera that has such conflicting reviews. They all start off with the good things such as great IQ, the low light functionality, the GPS and WiFi. So, along about the middle of the review you're feeling really good and saying to yourself, hey this is what I need, this is the camera for me. Then comes the downfalls. The maximum shutter speed of only 1/4000, the max flash sync speed of 1/180th, the 4.5 fps and then the most negative item of having only 11 point focus system. Insert burst bubble here.

I'm moving from Crop to FF. Why? Because I want to. Not to be short but, I do not have to explain why.

I want the best (5D3) but can't afford the best. I want the 6D but I do not want the 6D. I shoot landscapes. I travel quite a bit overseas and I shoot landscapes 80% of the time. 10% active (sports, baseball, football, active dogs, air shows,etc..) and 10% family candids and or portraits. While the 10% active doesn't seem to amount to much, I absolutely do not want to loose that capability.


For those that own the 6D - Do you think the 4.5 shutter speed and the 11 point focus system will sufice for my 10% active shooting style?


I'm so confused on this matter that I might even end up waiting until early 2017 when the 6D2 is to be released hoping that Canon will address some of their earlier downfalls.

Given your rhetoric I would wait as it sounds like you will only kick yourself if you buy something now that will only be superceded soon. As to your question regards the 6D's sporting prowess, I've shot soccer, rugby, cricket, American football and BIFs with no problem, even with the "restrictions" you've noted.

The 6D is truly a fine camera suitable for any shooting situation.

Hey man! Welcome to the FF club (soon). You will love it.

Your notes have all been drastically over-hyped by reviews and forum people (IMO). I've shot all sorts of Canon and Nikon FF cameras and the 6D does just fine. I've shot Hockey with it, a 6 month old baby, black labs running around, etc. The camera does a great job. If you have lenses that AF quick, you will be 100% happy with it. You can't just aim it at a random subject and expect it to track all around your viewfinder and expect to get a 99% keeper rate (as you can probably do with the 1dX2 or D5).

When shooting with a old 50 1.4, i found it to be slow and frustrating to use at times. The second i moved to the 35L, 24-105L, 135L, 70-200L and even the 50 STM, the AF is quick and pretty accurate.

I use my 6D for all of the things you have referenced, probably at the same % rate as you do. I find it to be perfect. Also, don't let the internet tell you that the 5D3 is this perfect holy grail of cameras. The 6D has better ISO performance and just as good of IQ as the 5D3. With the 5D3 you pay for better weather sealing, bigger/stronger body, and the AF. For your needs, I would assume the 6D would be "the best".

The 6D is fun to use with the Wifi and its smaller and compact. Its a huge bang for your buck, in the best way. I love being able to transfer a pic straight to my phone, not needing a computer.

The FPS is quick enough in my cases. I rarely use the burst, except for dedicated sports stuff. I haven't found it to limit me. Its not 10 FPS, but its not bad.

If you get one, just use the center point and be blown away by how insane this thing is in low light. You will be blown away by the IQ and details. You will love the size and feel of it. The ergonomics aren't perfect, but you get used to them within a couple of days. You just need to setup the buttons how they best fit your needs.

You gotta remember, the online reviews are guys that can find things critically wrong with all items. These are guys who shoot a 1DXII as their primary camera. Anything they touch is a "downgrade". Is the 6D perfect? No. Could it use better AF? Yes. Is it a really great do it all camera that makes incredible moments? YES.

I am a happy 6D guy and hate when people knock it like crazy because its not a 5D4. Of course its not, that's now what it was designed to do. Canon made it this way for a reason. Its an affordable FF camera that creates amazing images. I've used the hell out of mine and it's produced thousands of incredibly special moments of my 6 month old son and all of my hobbies.

I love mine. One more negative, though, no f8 autofocus so my 100-400 won't work with AF with the 1.4 TC on the 6D but will on the 7D2. If this is important it should be considered. If not then it does most other things very well.

As an aside, I prefer the ergonomics of the 6D to the 7D2. Every time. It can shoot wildlife very well although birds in flight takes some practice with this one.

These are all outstanding in very different ways and should be enough to convince dhornick that this is a fantastic and capable camera! Really love the last one - fantastic portrait.
