I never have time to dry out my wood while on the road. I cut and split it the day I burn it - you have to get creative!

A day on the beach today (Walberswick, Suffolk) with the trusty old EF24-105L attached. First shot is at 105mm and heavily cropped. Second shot is at 24mm.

So I'm considering getting a used 6D. Here's my thinking.

I'm looking for a second full-frame body. I've got a 6Dii right now and I love it. I can't afford a mirrorless or a 5Div. Used, a 5Diii and a 6Dii cost about the same but they're both still more than I want to spend. I'd pick the 6Dii over the 5Diii every day.

But as long as I'm considering the 5Diii at all, I should consider the 6D as well. They were released at the same time and are, fundamentally, the same camera. Except that a used 6D runs about half the price of a used 5Diii. That puts it within my budget.

What are the holes in my logic? Is 2012 technology still worth buying, still worth shooting with? Figured I'd ask folks who can make a 6D work well enough to make the pictures on this thread.

I would put it this way: Do you need the auto focus, burst, and dual card-slots of the 5Diii?

If not, then go for the 6D. Everything else is similar enough with those being the only three real differences. The 6D can focus in -3EV and the 5D can only do -2EV, but in all other regards the 5D is likely better when it comes to AF. IQ wise they're very similar with the 6D beating it slightly in dynamic range (and also beating the 6Dii in that aspect). Video is the same, with the 5D only slightly ahead due to the inclusion of a headphone jack. Ergonomics are different, but if you're using the 6Dii then the 6D will feel more normal. I'd say they're far more alike than they are different.

In regards to 2012 technology compared to modern cameras, I still love my 6D. The 6D and 50mm f1.4 USM is one of my favorite camera/lens combos I've ever used despite the fact that neither are high performers compared to what else is available today. I bought a Fujifilm XT3 a few months ago but I don't see myself selling the 6D anytime soon. The XT3 is more advanced in just about every way, but there's something about my 6D that I really like. I have a horrible habit of buying and selling camera gear, but the 6D has been here for over a year now and I zero plans of ever selling it.

Now that I have an X100V, it's really apparent that the AF on the 6D is bad. I still don't like the magenta colors I get from the camera, but the value for money is good, assuming the AF is usable for you. It never bothered me until I started using mirrorless a little here and there.

No, there is no hole in your logic. You already have a 6D2 so you know roughly what you are getting. You know its not really a camera for sports or action. You know the autofocus is not in the same league as the 5D3. However, the image quality is in the same league and for me, that is what matters. In fact, I think the high ISO performance of the 6D is better than the 5D3 or the 6D2.

A couple of months ago I gave serious consideration to upgrading to an EOS R6 but decided against it. There were two features that I wanted from a new body. First was a 1/8000 shutter because sometimes I can't use my Sigma 35mm Art at f/1.4 on the 6D with its 1/4000 shutter. I also would have liked a decent articulated screen for taking ground level shots. I didn't want to upgrade for better image quality (although I'm not saying that the R6 doesn't have better IQ). If I did get the R6, I would still hold on to the 6D because I've owned it from new, is well looked after, has low shutter count and I know I wouldn't get a lot of money for it.

In the end, I kept the 6D and decided to live without the articulated screen and faster shutter speed. Instead (thread drift) I splashed some of the cash on a little Ricoh GR3 which has a 24mp APS C sensor, razor sharp fixed 28mm (equiv) lens and slips into your jeans pocket. IQ is almost as good as my 6D and better than my old 7D.

Definitely love my old 6D. Low-light/existing-light is what attracted me to the 6D in the first place. On a lark I shot this image of a buddy of mine one evening. It was in his "shed" with no lights but a bit of nightlight coming in through a window...I could vaguely make out his outline but that was about it.
