I really want to get this lens but heard it is prone to AF failure...so what do you guys think???

I wondered the same thing before I bought it, then I figured you only hear from the folks with problems, not the ones without, so maybe it is not as bad as it seems.

No AF problems with mine! I believe I shot these wide open.

Who knows? Maybe it is. I bought mine between Christmas and New Year. A few hours ago I took the photo in the posting linked below. I let AF do its thing, and it was dark enough so that I wanted to use LV and then manually focus. Regardless, I let the camera and lens do their thing with me working through the viewfinder. It seems to work just fine. Nevermind that it's a very fast lens. ;) I love that lens.

UPDATE: I actually used a flash in that photo with a 1/2 CTO gel over it. However, I did nothing in PP to sharpen the image.

So, I'm thinking about getting this for when I go out with friends on a 5d mkII... I'm looking into a really light weight prime with pretty good results wide open...

My favorite lenses right now are the 35L and 85L however I always worry with those lenses on my camera after a mimosa or three...

Can anyone vouch for this at f/1.4? or even f/2?

It can be soft at f1.4. f2 is pretty decent, actually.

I just sold mine, but it was actually decent at f/1.4 already (low contrast though, and slightly dull colors, which made it look less sharp), but at f/1.8 it was very sharp. I'm already regretting selling it, since it'd be good to have light-weight alternative to 50L.

I agree that it can be a bit soft at f/1.4, but I almost always leave it on f/1.8 and it does great!
Here's a shot at f/2 with AF, that I also posted in a GSD thread.

He was moving around, I think it's pretty sharp! No PP. Shot in B&W in camera.

I really love this lense.
Heres a picture of our first grandson taken at f/1.4.
Not the greatest lighting, I did not use a flash.
Love the way it nutralizes the background.
Thanks to everyone for this thread, without it I may not have purchased this lense.

I haven't had problems with the AF motor, but did manage to damage the focus guides when the lens was left in my bag at infinity focus. See my post heredetailing the repair and why I think you should use a lens hood and leave it anywhere but infinity focus.

Nice picture!

OT: As to the gesture, instead of hard I must say I find it over-used, offensive, lacking style, "un-cultured"... it doesn't make me angry, just instantly makes me label the person using it as being someone I don't need to consider. Stay away from using it ...
