Do you use auto or manual focus for the majority of your photos?

I use AF the most

Yeah same. I've tried using manual bu I cant tell if its ever in focus. I don't know if it's the viewfinder on the 450d or if its a problem for everyone. I tried google but couldn't find anything on the subject.

Get a focusing screen, but they only work if your shooting wide open or larger apertures.

Location scouting.

Doesn't take long at all. I can guess pretty accurately at what my settings should be depending on what the lighting conditions are like.

QUOTED IMAGE

Hey guys just looking for some learner advise please. This 50mm lens, is my only one at the moment so i use it all the time. I was at a car event at the weekend, and here in the UK we have a very bright white Autumn sun. I was quite far away from the action so i could leave it at f1.4 giving me a nice fast speed to avoid shake. The problem was at times i could only get a fast enough shutter speed to get a exposure of two thirds on the brighter side which was giving me lots of over exposed area's.
I notice in the pic above that JoJo has a great exposure in a similar tricky light, and from previous posts he mentions always using f1.4

So what is the trick, for me to be able to take a pic with these bright exposures at f1.4.
Sorry if there is a really obvious answer to this, i am very new to photography, and i wont learn if i don't ask.

Thanks in advance.

You need a camera with a faster shutter speed.

You're probably gonna have to shoot around f/2-2.8. That shot of the dog was at iso 100, f/1.4 and 1/1250. Was your iso as low down as it could go??
