I'm a total noob, but now that I have one of these lenses I feel that I should join in.

whats everyone thought's on buying this lens used versus new? maybe a saving of $50 versus new over used.... and considering life span of the AF motor on this lens, lol... ?

How does it focus in low light situations?

Im going to give this lens a try after two inconsistent copies of the Sigma 50mm. Input appreciated!

i bought it new because the used prices [here at least] weren't really enough of a saving to warrant taking the risk imo i even watched a used one sell on ebay for MORE than going to the local shop & buying it over the counter full price!! ;)

I bought mine used on here, and have had no issues whatsoever.

Another option is refurbished with 90 day warranty:

About $320 and in stock, atm.

Focus in low light is good. About the same to the 28mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 for me. ;)

Thought about doing that with my Pentax K1000. I still might.

Thanks jon:) I just got a new MBP with aperture (have not uploaded LR3 yet)

Im not really used to aperture but it has a "vintage" preset so i checked that on then brought down the saturation a little messed around with the curves just a tad and added some vignette.

But the shot cam out really cool before i did any editing which is nice cause I'm really bad at PPing

^^^ its crazy you do see that sometimes on eBay.

^^^ glad to hear. Buying used on here is a pretty safe bet, but, the savings in this case I don't think are much.

^^^ Thanks for the input. Glad to hear its about as good as the rest... thats good enough for me. As for buying refurbished I can't! The Canon USA website won't sell to Canadian's!

If Adorama had it I would have snatched it up. Oh well. I don't think the price difference from new to used is really enough so I think Ill just buy it new locally.

Thanks everyone.

That lens was part of what got me thinking about maybe doing portraits eventually.

I did a few shots in the redwoods, then experimented locally the past couple of weeks. Finding that it is a hard lens to remove.

:D
