I wonder if Mama Downy is not somewhere fairly close, keeping an eye on this young one. I have noticed with many juveniles in my yard that parents are often watching from afar and continue to supplement feed their young as they deem necessary for a pretty long time (weeks) until the young are fully independent. Hopefully, that's the case here. If not, he's getting a crash course in following instinct

You are right, Janet, Mom or Dad was likely not too far off...I hope so anyway, this one just looked so pitiful.

Great shots Ian! Last year I watched a young Hairy learning his way around, squacking like crazy, & it was Dad that kept coming to him, than they'd both fly off... this went on for days... Always interesting watching 'nature'...
