So, I'm very new to photography, but my wife is a very high level amateur who does some paid portrait work a couple of times a month.

She is currently using a 60d with an assortment of primes for her work (35,50,85 primarily). When I use her camera, I usually just tool around with the 18-135 kits lens.

For an anniversary/early Christmas/birthday present I just purchased her a 6d and the tamron 24-70.

My interests are very different (basically not people) and I purchased myself the Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 VC.

I also want to get a really wide lens, but don't want to spend too much for it as this might just be a fleeting thing for me.

I like architecture and nature mostly.

Any suggestions for bang for the buck? I'm not opposed to used or refurbished for the right price.

Thanks in advance for your help
Joe

Are you looking for a wide angle to use on the 6d or the 60d? For the 60d, the new 10-18 Ef-S is $299, and a good choice. You can also look at the tokina 11-16. On the 6d, wide angle zooms are going to be expensive. You can look at the 14mm rokinon/bower/sanyang for a fixed wide angle- around $300 as well.

For the 6d in all likelihood. I think we will be selling the 60d to recoup some cost.

If you want wide, and you are planning on keeping the 60D, either a new 10-18 STM IS or used 10-22 are great options, which one is better will really come down to if you want/need IS or an STM motor.

Just read your comment about using the 6D. The cheapest FF wide angle zoom option is the 17-40, which could be more than keeping the 60D and buying either of the above options.

Will this wide angle lens be used on the 60D or the 6D? Have you considered a Canon 17-40mm f/4? They're in stock right now, refurbished, for $671.99. This guy's selling his for $550!

If you're going to use it on the 60D I would look at a Tamron 10-24mm. I used to own this lens and it was great. Only problem is that is doesn't work too well on a full frame sensor camera, like your wife's 6D.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys.

I may have to consider keeping the 60d since the wide options seem to be better for my price range.

I had seen some good deals on the sigma 10-20, but didn't realize that they were not full frame lenses.

Heya,

Tamon 17-35 would do you justice on both cameras for what you're looking for. And it's inexpensive.

Very best,

for cheap you are probably (for what you said you want to shoot) best off with either the 17-40 for around 600 bucks used, or keeping your 60d and using the 10-18, both for about the same price maybe 100 more to do the 60d route (I figure you could get at least 400 for the 60d) and that would give you (and her when she might want it) 2 camera's, but I would look into which gives the better corners (will be important for both your architecture and landscape shots) for me that would be the discerning factor.

If your wife is doing paid work of any kind she needs a second body available, so hold on to the 60D.
Cameras can and will fail at the least expected moment so she needs a backup.

They're selling so cheap now a days also so it would hurt more to sell it than to keep it.

Does this mean you're looking for something that is ultra-wide, AND full-frame compatible? Keep in mind, if it's ultra-wide on full-frame, it's only moderately wide on the 60D. Not to mention the price barrier to entry is a lot higher if you need a full-frame compatible lens. Though others here can likely suggest some good, third-party alternatives
