I've owned this lens for awhile and it usually stays in my bag, during most of my shoots. Recently I used it on some closeup beauty shots, but I think it's time to sell. Not sure if I want lighting equipment or invest in another lens.

I do a good bit or portrait work (on location & studio). Currently I have a 50mm 1.4 & 24-105mm f/4. Which lens would you recommend for this type of work?

Thanks,

It's a little close to the 50mm, but have you considered the 85mm f/1.8? Seems to be recommended for portrait work from what I've read around here.

Alternatively, if you don't want to duplicate focal length, you could consider the 135mm f/2 L.

That's my completely non-experienced, non-professional opinion based on just reading the forum.

EDIT - Hahaha....and two people posted while I was forming the post (I stepped away for a bit) with those two exact lenses. Told you I read it on the forum. ;)

On your T2i:

50/1.4 and 85/1.8

On your 5DII:

85/1.8 and 135/2L

Unless you have lots and lots of money to spend, then substitute the 85/1.2L II.

135L, hands down. Magical! Or a 200mm f/2.8L which, while I haven't used it myself, I've heard is not far behind the 135L.

I've found that indoors, while using stobes or speedlights, the 24-105 works fine since it's usually stopped down anyway. Outdoors though the 24-105 doesn't cut it for portraits IMO.

The 85 1.8 is great bang for the buck! Probably the best bang for your buck to be honest and will out perform your 50 1.4. Chances are if you get an 85 1.8 you're 50 will not come out of your bag very often and that'll be the next lens you offload.

That would be a good choice and possibly have some left over cash for more speedlights, strobe, or just put in the savings lol.

i own the 135L and the 100L, for portrait shooting they're honestly very very close in focal length. just my opinion i can't really tell too much difference

i love the macro capabilities of the 100L and the AF on the 135L is much faster

To OP: What is it about the 100L on your crop camera that you don't like?'

If it is too narrow for your desired use, then the 135L would be worse, as it is narrower.
If you already have the 50 f1.4 lens, then the only option would be a 85mm lens.
Though that is not much different than the 100L you have now.

Personally I love my 100L at a portrait lens. f2.8 keeps both eyes in focus and it has IS

The 100L is my lens of choice for head & shoulders portraiture (and food, product, etc...): it has both shallow and deep DOF, IS, it's very sharp, and being a prime makes it easier to gauge DOF. A winner. Now, if it only had tilt and shift capabilities...
