I have an old Canon i850 printer that I have attached through a Linksys printserver to my router that works great with numerous Windows PCs on my home network (XP, Win 7 and Win 8.1). To set it up I use the assigned static IP address for the printer.

I'm trying to get it to work with a new Macbook Air that I picked up for my daughter, but no luck.

When I go to the Canon site it says there isn't a printer driver for Mavericks (but there is one for Snow Leopard) ... so does that mean I'm out of luck? I tried setting things up by providing the IP address for the printer and using the Snow Leopard driver for the i850, but no go. I also tried the generic (HP?) drivers.

Is there another option like Airprint???

This old printer works flawlessly so it'd be a shame to garbage it. Any help would be appreciated.

No, AirPrint is for iOS, the system that works on the iPhone and iPad. AirPrint doesn't work on OSX that is on the MacBook Air. Apple updates printer drivers, so you may have some luck irrespective of what the Canon site says.

Does the MacBook see the printer on the wifi network? To check, open System Preferences, Printers & Scanners and see if it is listed on the left column of available printers. If not, try hitting the Plus button at the bottom of that pane and find the Canon printer on the wifi network. You can configure the printer from there.

Good luck.

Thanks for responding.

No, it didn't see it in the list, but likely because it's through a print server. I ended up buying a new Canon MG7120 printer after spending a bit too much time trying to figure this one out.

The MG7120 was about the least expensive Canon that allowed ethernet connection, was on sale for $100 off and I got another $25 off with a Staples coupon. Essentially a brand new multifunction printer for the price of a set of ink for the i850.

I'll just use up the ink in the i850 by connecting to my PC by USB and then after it runs out say goodbye to it at the local Eco Center :)
