Nice puzzle. Disney popped into my mind only because you said "blockbustingly well known" but the construction is far too authentic. Seems to be in an area with little or no snow (seemingly flatter roof than castles or walled cities in snowy areas). It's almost a match for part of Glurns, but I feel like it's farther south. Vegetation looks southern.

EDIT: And I suspect it's slightly newer than Glurns, or at least used defensively more recently. The ports look like they are sized for rifles, not bows. Could have been changed, but still indicates that someone cared about that as recently as 1600 or so.

Analysis is pretty good. Country is wrong though. I really thought this one would go quickly. It just goes to show. I reiterate - this one is not very obscure. I drove about 150 km from where I was on vacation to see it ... so I knew about it and considered the journey worthwhile.

Well done. Not the usual shot of the glass house. Everyone else - time to reread The Da Vinci Code

That reminded me so much of the Freudenberg ruins that I had to check my photos!!

To quote Groucho «  close, but no cigar »

Is Freudenberg in Germany? If so, I'm a bit confused how this is close to Rennes-le-Château, France.
Perhaps others were thrown off by this too?

While the history of Rennes le Chateau influenced Dan Brown, it is never actually mentioned in his novel. Not sure how rereading it would have helped here. But whatevs. On with the game.

Yes, I too was a little put off by the 'close' reference. After all, the two places are nearly 800 miles apart!

I was referring to a place I've been in Switzerland (external link). Has turret like that, but it's in total decay.
