I'm sorry to have taken so long in replying but I've been away. Captive hippos are certainly not rare. Since the first one in London zoo in the nineteenth century, they are to be found in all the major zoos in the world, and are, in fact, one of the most populat zoo animals.

Well, I was the one who said you said they were so "rare", which was really my impression of what you wrote in your hint. Nonetheless the hint led me to google "hippo in captivity", and I recognized in the first page of results the tiles on the wall straight away! That's one hungry hungry hippo, btw.
