Black Dove or Pigeon...any ideas on ID? No Photo...

I saw what looked like a dove in the rafters of our barn this morning. It was the shape of a Mourning Dove, but appeared to be totally black and larger than a Mourning Dove. It kept flying around in the barn without making any sound. The beak appeared to be black too.
Any ideas as to what it could have been? It was in Vermont, on the East Coast!

Might have been a Rock Pigeon. In the wild as well as in captivity these guys have a large variation in the gene pool for feather color. Try googling Black Rock Pigeon and see if that matches up.

^^Thanks Evan. It certainly is possible. I saw a few really dark colored birds in the photos.

Feral pigeons (Rock Doves) frequently hang out or nest in barns.
