Whitetail deer are apparently on a path to take over the World.....so here's my story.

It's not unusual for me to see the deer in my neighborhood, especially while walking the dogs. What is unusual is a visit at 4 PM, and me with a camera in hand.

Here's the little guy in what looks like a very natural woodsy kind of setting. In truth it's my backyard.

See, I told you it was my backyard.....no lawn!

Getting a whiff of some birdfeeders.....

......and checking the rain gauge.

He was cautious around me, but not afraid

In all honesty he was drawn in by some stale bread I had tossed in the edge of the woods. While in the area he showed a liking for some sunflower seed I have out for the birds too. I think he would have let me feed him by hand, but I stopped his approach at a distance of about 15 feet. Maybe one day.....

Fun shots, Steve. It's interesting when they get so close. Not so sure it's that good he feels so acclimated to humans being so close. When's hunting season in your area? The deer here know when they're being hunted and they totally disappear for those 2 months in the fall.

It is great when the game come to you, I have wrestled with telling the story because people are so sure that interaction is bad and for some I'm sure it is but that is life in the woods, I am sure he will still avoid the dangers of the wild or become part of the food chain in any vent be sure there is another coming up behind him. In the mean time he is showing you that he has no human emotion.

Very nice, especially the head shots. I wonder what is going on in his ears, maybe bug damage?

I'm sure I'm not the first human this one has seen Ian, and to be truthful I doubt hunting season that opens in a month or so will have much of any effect on his behavior this close to a big city. It's unfortunate that other than starvation I'd bet becoming road kill is a primary cause of mortality amongst this small herd. One of my dogs chased him out of the yard a couple of days ago so maybe we've "reset" the fear and respect in this guy. Thanks as always for your comments....they are both welcome and valued my friend.

Haha Jeff, there are certainly dangers around here both on 4 legs and 4 wheels. I don't mind being "wildlife friendly" under the right circumstances, but I don't want him to become dependent on me for food. I resisted buying a bag of deer corn the other day for just that reason. I also found out he likes raw peanuts too :) Thanks, and as always I appreciate your comments.

I thought the head shots turned out quite nicely too Sandy; and thanks for the nice compliment. I thought those dark areas in his ears might be ticks when I first saw them, but couldn't determine that for a fact on closer inspection. He looked pretty healthy overall for which I'm glad.
