The following four captures of a Broad-bodied Chaser show my usual stalking technique. First of all and resisting the temptation to rush-in I take a distance shot in which I try to arrange the composition in such a way that the Dragon's resting perch can be identified and that the background gives at least an indication of the environment.
As I gradually move-in I can concentrate more on the dragon and less on the environment.
At this stage I'm totally oblivious to the environment and 100% concentrated on the dragon. With 100mm macro moving any closer and I run a serious risk of spooking away the dragon. This is where a 180mm would be useful.
The final stage is to really push my luck and move close enough to achieve a frame-filling capture. I'm within approximately 9 inches (22cm) of touching the dragon!
