Also, take a look at the C1 v8 intro videos here:

https://www.youtube.com …FQH6eHHX5Pw2Lf0DO8UB5siyH (external link)

I think even LR users will have to acknowledge the solid foundation for raw conversion and the advanced controls for tone, color and local adjustment that do not exist in LR and that many LR users want.

Yeah, I've actually converted to Capture One since this thread started. It is better than Lightroom.

don't know if this article was linked already, interesting read:
https://fstoppers.com …-raw-processor-best-24769 (external link)

I'm playing with V8 that just came out, not too hard to get around and I like the controls. Do I like it enough to spend $300? Not sure yet, that'll probably take me the 60 days I have to decided with the trial.

I have a lot of plugins for LR and like the "edit in..." functionality. And $300 for "just" an other RAW converter (and then pulling things into LR/PS for further work) seems a bit steep. But not ruling it out quite yet.

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

To me it appears that, out of all of the major raw converter applications, Capture One is making the hardest play for users of Adobe products that have been turned off or simply started looking elsewhere once the Creative Cloud was instituted.

Capture One, at least for the Mac, is highly AppleScriptable with a fairly extensive AppleScript dictionary, if that's how you roll.

Much as I might like C1v8 the (probably £300 in UK) is way beyond my means. LR, at least for me with a school age child in the family is just about affordable (about £55 for the perpetual licence). So even if C1 has an edge in quality over LR, LR would still win for me. I would love to be shooting with a 7D and three nice lenses, but again (even secondhand) my budget won't stretch that far. It would just strech to a 50D (from a 20D), which was my 50th birthday present. For some of us the budget is important.

I get where you're coming from man. I was just saying that I've discovered Capture One is better than Lightroom since this thread was started and I didn't even know Capture One existed.

??? Before you start writing random babble, maybe just quickly check the price.
Capture One costs 229€ + tax in Europe - tax outside Denmark to private customers is 25%, this translates to about 286€ to private individuals in Europe - which is about 227 pounds in the UK.

The upgrade also costs only 69€ plus tax which is about 86€, translating to about 68 pounds.
Not that expensive either.

Other side note:
Most UK prices are excessive anyway (unless you are lucky to find an offer, but even then it might just about give you price parity) - so shopping in the rest of Europe is highly recommended where possible on expensive items.
(On low cost items, shipping eats up any savings...)

Just found out that Capture One Express (a full featured RAW editor sans local adjustments and tethrered capture) is free for Sony users, and upgrade to the Pro version is $30 :) A caveat - it will only process files captured by Sony cameras. Anyway, worth every penny :)

That is actually new.
Or at least I never saw it publicised with Capture One 7 (if my memory serves me right).

Going to try out this Capture One v.8, I have LR2 and PS CS3, I can't really get on with LR, I only use it to edit high ISO photos then put them into CS3 to finish up.

Ah, with the older versions of LR and PSCS3, you may indeed prefer a more up-to-date Raw processor. I use Lightroom for the Digital Asset Management (DAM) tools, plus it's easy to keep up-to-date with a good Raw processor. I use Lightroom4, which has the up-to-date Camera Raw processor!

If you are serious about comparing, try the free trial of Lightroom 5 and compare with Capture one, but realize that Lightroom will only "prove its stuff" if you want DAM along with the Camera Raw processing!!

It never happened with version 7. 7 Express (when we finally dragged it, kicking and screaming, out of Phase One, who'd dropped Express without telling anyone and hoped we wouldn't notice) was available on the same basis as Pro, and with the same camera support.

As a long-time Capture One user, and a big fan of v.7 (definitely my current go-to converter) I'm really rather disappointed with v.8.

Despite all the promised improvements - especially in the three most important things that matter to me:

* I'm seeing literally no IQ improvement from the new Raw processing engine, even right at the pixel level;
* the NR is possibly not as good - high ISO conversions in v.7 seem to hold their edges better than the same files converted in 8; and
* the highlight recovery improvement is marginal at best.

It's probably a bit snappier, but 7 was fast enough on my machine already; and any cataloguing improvements are lost on me because I use sessions.

And it crashed three times on me in about an hour last time I used it, a couple of nights back - more times than 7 has crashed on me this year.

The new UI is nice, though...

In itself it's still an excellent converter, and if I was new to Capture One I'd be thrilled; but to my eyes it's just version 7 in a pretty frock.

I'll probably upgrade eventually (I'll have to when I get a 7D Mk II) but for now, thanks but no thanks - another "improved" piece of software that fails to live up to its hype.

So you aren't happy that in Capture One version 8 you can now move the end points of the Curves tool just like you could in Photoshop for 25 years and Lightroom for 6 years?
