I went camping last weekend and spent the evening trying to get some night photos, I had over 80 of the milky way, none turned out, so I attempted a few with the moon. Not sure of the crop, I wanted to keep in the upper third to appear at apex? But may have cropped to close to the moon. CC is appreciated. Thanks, Cole

I think the moon is one subject that you can ignore the rule of thirds
It's big, it's bold. Unless you have another object to highlight I would leave the moon centered
Not sure about the colour? But nice and sharp

I agree, keep moon shots centred and personally, I like it when its filling most of the frame. Did you alter the colour? I prefer a high-ish contrast B&W.

color was barely touched in LR, there was a tad of smoke in the air from area wildfires, it had just finished storming so the smoke was light. thank you for the advice.

Moon shots can be okay if they are off centered, as long as it's along the horizontal plane, not vertical. But yes, completely centered is most pleasing.

Well in that case that's actually pretty cool!

I actually really like this! It looks almost "star wars" like. What was your set up for this shot?

Excellent. Maybe I'll give it a go tonight! I was curious what the focal length was and if I'd have enough at 250 but it appears i will once I crop. Thanks so much!

I tried for the first time to take some moon shots last night, but I wasn't able to get any detail on the moon because it was so bright! How do I overcome this?

Used a 70-300mm lens at 300mm. Tried ISO 100 and ISO 400, and they both came out as a complete white circle. Wasn't able to retrieve any detail using LR and I shot in RAW.

Tips? Thanks!

Faster shutter speed, assuming you keep the aperture and ISO the same.

Mr SD Aztec- From one Aztec to another, try shooting in manual. Set an aperture , arbitrary really say f5.6 then choose an ISO of say ISO 400 then play with the shutter. Probably need around 1/250 -1/400 is my guess. See what happens. That's what is so great with manual, you can try anything!
