Currently I have a 1TB external HDD that houses all of my photos.
Explain here how you store your photos safely and why you use the method you chose.

Multiple external HDDs, stored at more than one location. All images are on at least 3 separate drives, with at least one stored offsite.

So after a new shoot, you grab all three and add them?

I shoot Polaroid so I take them, hold them while the picture magically appears, and then stick it in my pile of other Polaroids. Just in case.

2 USB drives for Volume 1 for fully processed Jpegs, and PSD's. Volume 2 raws.
NAS Volume 1 for fully processed Jpegs, and PSD's. Volume 2 raws.
NAS at my mom's place with a mirror of fully processed Jpegs, and PSD's, backed up via FTP and syncback
print to album

I have 2 copies of raws, and 3 copies of processed images. My usb drives are powered off and only powered on when I do backups. I have a dedicated powerstrip for this. The NAS's generally sleep until they get a command and they wake up.

Three internal HDDs, one separate networked computer (so, four HDDs) plus burnt to DVDs. Five copies total. Aside from select few, I don't really keep RAWs.

I have 2 Raid systems for my work. First is a mirrored array of 2 3tb disks, I keep all my photos and jobs and correspondence on here. All data is redundant. If one disk goes down, pop in another (hot swappable) and all the data from the good disk is copied onto the new disk automatically. I also have a 3rd disk that I put in each week and rotate one of the others to an off site storage.

Second, I have a raid drive with 2 4tb disks. This is in JOBD setup. I do my backups to this set, alternating disks each backup session.

So after a new shoot, you grab all three and add them?

I usually download the cards to the computer and do an initial cull, then copy what is left to two external HDDs and a USB stick. At that point I have 5 copies, so can reformat the cards to use again. If I am going to be working on them fairly soon, I will leave the set on the computer, otherwise that will be deleted leaving 3 copies (the 2 externals and the stick).

One external is my working disc and is always with the computer, the second disc is the local backup, and is kept hidden away in a different room when not actually being added to. That way if somebody breaks in and steals the computer, the odds are they will only take the working drive. I then just need to buy a new computer and plug in the backup disc to be my new main disc (and copy it to a new HDD for a backup of course). The stick gets thrown in my car and next time I am at a friends house it will get copied to a spare drive I keep there (I have them at several friends places). Shoots that I really don't want to lose may end up on 2 or 3 such drives, giving me 4 or 5 copies in multiple locations.

Similarly, when I get around to working on a shoot, the edited versions will also be backed up in the same way. Any images that are particularly important, such as those I will be entering into competitions and exhibitions, will have all working copies and variants saved on ALL available drives.

NAS at parents house serve dual purpose. Not only is it off site backup, but it can be great content for your parents.

Setup an ftp via NAS firmware on port 21, have a DNS, forward port 9191 to 21(for security reasons), and you've got a semi permanent solution without recurring costs.
