i recently got a grip for my 60d,its a polaroid brand, came with a remote shutter,I've had it on my camera for about a week now,i only used one battery in the compartment,i have only taken it out a few time to try it out,i turned the grip on to try the shutter and things, all seemed good,i went out last night to shoot at the ocean and my battery was stone dead, the cam was turned off and battery was full or close to full when i turned it off the day before, grip was also turned off, does only having one battery in the compartment make a difference, should i always have 2 in there,i have a second battery but i don't like the idea of having 2 batteries in the grip and then if they go dead while shooting I'm left with nothing,i like to have my spare charged and ready to go,do grips use more battery even when turned off?i am not familiar with grips as this is my first one,any thoughts on this,

I've got various brands of grips (Canon, Meike, Photix) on a 400D, 550D, 60D and 70D and none of them drain the batteries. Using one battery shouldn't make any difference as long as you've got it in the correct slot in the grip.

I have Meike and Bower and they don't drain when off. The battery should not drain when the camera is off.

I've had a Polaroid grip on my 60D for as long as I've had the camera, maybe 4 years. I've used Canon, Maxtech, and Wasabi batteries in the grip, singly and in mixed pairs. I have never had a battery drain problem. If it is the grip, or the camera, something needs to go in for repairs.

What lens was mounted at the time? IIRC, there were some Tamron lenses (24-70VC?) that caused this issue. It had something to do with the VC, and Tamron updated the firmware in the lens, free of charge, to fix it. Perhaps some other lenses do this, also.

I had a Meike grip on my 60D for a year with no problems. Then, while we were on vacation, both batteries would be dead in the morning. It was grip, no doubt. I replaced it with a Canon grip and problem solved.

If the "bare" camera doesn't discharge a battery, I think I would be inclined to replace the grip. Otherwise this constant discharge (potentially deep discharge) and recharging are going to have serious effect on battery life.

By the way, is http://www.amazon.com …ery-Digital/dp/B00HNU6LUI (external link) the grip you purchased. To put it bluntly it sucks as far as reviews and I always get concerned when the number of worst category 1 reviews exceed the number of average (category 3) reviews.

I had this happen one time with a Zeikos grip on my 550D; freshly charged batteries went dead overnight. Recharged the batteries and it never happened again - I'm still using that grip with no problems, years later.

If it happens again, definitely check the grip.

ya that link was the grip,it had many decent reviews,i charged the battery and still only have one battery in the tray and went out 2 nights in a row so far and took lots of live view shots and battery is still full, seems like the above poster had same issue, drained it once then not any more, like i mentioned i just wanted to try one out,i didn't need one by any means i rarely shoot portrait mode sideways i just wanted to see what all the hype was,i like the feel of it so far.hope it was just a one time issue and won't be a problem,i have never had to return a item from amazon and i love everything i have got from there.

WHat brand are the batteries. Are you sure the battery itself is good? It's also possible that the battery was near dead and was simply not being read properly.

the battery in question was a no name brand, when i got my 70d it was a kit with an extra 2 batteries along with the factory battery,it just says lithium ion on the battery,no name, the battery has always worked well on the 60d and 70d without the grip,i was pretty sure it was full when i put it in the grip and then next day it was stone dead, now its charged and I've taken cam out 2 eve for some night shots with grip and live view and still full so maybe a one time issue i hope, thanx for the replies

Even if the grip works out fine, do yourself a favor and buy a couple of quality batteries like Wasabi or STK. Much cheaper than Canon batteries, highly rated and communicate perfectly with the camera/grip.

This always intrigues me... Folks go out and spend all this $$$ on the camera body and lenses, then "cheap out" on grips, batteries and memory cards. Then have problems. I always go with the genuine stuff. I make it part of my budget. I may still have problems, but hey, at least I tried...

I always bought the aftermarket grips.

Some of them had battery drain, some of them stopped battery draining. I don't know why. I disassembled one and put it back together and seems to work ok now.

IF your grip drains then yeah, take out the batts. Small price to pay for saving $150...

If you are using it every day then you are likely charging every day anyways!
