You might want to buy some actual desiccant. Who knows how much moisture the rice might have picked up from the environment through the package (especially if you live where there is high humidity).

...or cesium (http://enenews.com …side-fukushima-prefecture (external link)). :)

The solution is to spray the camera with "NeverWet" ;)

The concept is called conformant coating, and has been used for a good many years on electronics, to protect it from moisture and dirty environments. It's used as an alternative to potting the electronics by embedding the electronics in polyurethane or similar (a quite common concept for car electronics).

....

Conformant or conformal?

Oops - my fingers doing me bad. It should be conformal - even if conformant is used now and then, but then normally when noting what standard the conformal coating is conforming to :p

Also I'd bet not all conformal coat is applied via CVD for cameras, its likely a urethane based conformal coat as opposed to something like paralyne... but still common sense goes a long way with electronics and moisture.

NASA fully pots some of their electronics in a case of RTV (DOW 3145) to ensure a good seal from moisture.

I shoot with the 5D3+24-105L in the rain before. I shoot for abput 30mins. When I'm not shooting, it is hiding in the raincoat, but when I shot, it didn't have any protection. And I didn't have any problem and still hasn't show any sign of problem. And that was like 6 months ago.

I've gotten cameras damp before (drizzle to light rain) without issue.

But those experiences did eventually convince me to buy a LensCoat Rain Coat (external link). I keep that and the usual supply of plastic bags and cheap ponchos handy in case of weather.

Since purchase the Rain Coat hasn't gotten wet once, but I have used it on hikes and camping to keep out branches and dust...

The problem with rain is that the camera can survive 9 times out of 10 without no trace of an issue.
Then it can fail the 10th time.

And the other issue is that even that first rain can start corrosion that isn't possible to know about.

So cheap rain protection is well worth the (often very close to zero) money.

Yep exactly ! even a garbage bag and some rubber bands will do the job very well

This is how I clean my 5DM2 and 24-105, so don't understand how a bit of rain hurt your MK3.

Looks like this is the thing on youtube now. Here's similar "tutorial", but this is only Sony and that's Ok to destroy it :)
