Hello,

Here localy one guy has 200 1.8 lens with case, hood, hood cover. Even tripod mount has no signs of use. But he wants $4000. Is it worth? Or better to source 200 2 IS?

I have serious GAS. Currently for that range have 135 2.0, 70-200 2.8 II, 300 2.8 II, 400 2.8 IS

Heya,

That lens goes between $3500 and $4200 based on overall condition and completeness.

Just get it. You can always sell it. There will always be demand for this lens.

Very best,

Two problems, used 200 2.0 here sells for $6000. Another in our small market I don't believe that it will be easy to sell it later.

What do you want the lens for?

Do you do paid shoots?

Will it pay for itself?

Does your 400 F2.8 not produce enough? At that focal length and F2.8, it produces more compression of the background.

Is it just another lens to put on a shelf or will you actively use it past the first few times before you lust after the next great white whale?

Had 300 2.8 I IS, bought 400 2.8 I IS, bought 300 2.8 II IS, sold 300 2.8 I IS. Since than 300 is my go to sport events lens, which fits backpack. 400 2.8 is so heavy, even regreting that i bought it. So think 200 was also handholdable and fits in backpack

Heya,

So buy the 200 F1.8, and see if you still reach for the 300 F2.8 II IS and can deal with the lack of reach. They will produce very similar background compression, dependent on distance to target.

Personally I'd stick with the 300 F2.8 II. Better lens.

If your 400 was too heavy, wait until you feel the 300 and 200 in the bag.

Very best,

How do you think this 200 1.8 will have collectors value in future?

Heya,

Niche collectors. I don't know very many "collectors" who just buy lenses for the sake of it. Mostly it's folk who think they're going to do amazing stuff like they saw on the web and somehow either don't or continue letting it sit on a shelf. The rest of folk who buy this kind of lens use it until it breaks and gush every day over it a little.

As long as people shoot EOS, it will hold good value.

you can pay a sophmore college graphic arts kid at a community college $20 to make ANY phot taken with the 200mm 2.8 ($500 lens) to look like any of the lenses mentioned here. If you took those same 2 photos and posted them on here with a blind poll I would bet $100 that over %50 would get it wrong, as to which lens produced the image.

Want to test this?

Send me the lens :)
Ill take care of the $20 towards the college student...

Don't even think about hand holding this one without IS. Unless you're shooting really fast shutter speed all the time. The 200f2 can be easily hand held, but I doubt the 1.8 can in low light.

To buy it as an investment is questionable at that price. To buy it and use it a lot makes more sense to me. It is a very well regarded lens, but I don't think Canon still services it.

Just buy it already! Sheesh a person doesn't have to always justify every single thing they buy! And please don't say something like, I still have to discuss it with my wife/gf...whatever. I can't stand that! It's like people have to ask permission to spend THEIR OWN money! And btw there is no such thing as 50/50 because if you say "Yes" but she says "No"...you know what the final result will be...NO!!! so where's your 50%??

Anyway sorry for the mini rant and again, just buy the lens already!
