We've decided this is a Juvenile Broad Winged Hawk. It was in the middle of the road drinking from a puddle when I first saw it, then it flew up into a dark portion of the woods. All looking into the light, of course ;)

Congrats Ian, always a great day when you get a new one. For shooting into the sun, you did very well all in all. I like the first shot best followed by the first first tree shot. For a youngster, it sure knows how to scream.
Congrats once again!

One would think there can't be many new ones left for you, but then... Very nice , Ian.

Many thanks Bret. There was a second one farther in the woods calling, but I couldn't get my sights on him. Yes, definitely fun to get a new one.

Nicely done Ian!

Thanks folks. When I was just driving along, at first I thought it was a crow, (it was about the same size and in total silhouette). Only when it flew up could I see it was a hawk. Even looking into the dark shade of the forest canopy it was hard to see any detail with the naked eye because of the backlight. I think I bumped the EC to +1 to compensate.
