Choosing the right lens for a crop camera can be very hard. I have used a 24-105, 24-70L, and 17-40L on my croppers...

Why do people put FF lenses on crop cameras?

Good point. You should give me that 100-400 in your sig line since FF lenses just don't make sence on that 7D of yours.

Its better than putting EF-s lenses on FF cameras!

for me I knew Id get a FF camera eventually so I wanted to future proof my lens collection, so I only bought EF lenses. And the EF lenses are great!

Everyone is dreaming about a new 7D Mark 2. Not me, I'm dreaming of an EF-S 100-400mm.

I've never had much problem deciding which lens I need (want?). The much larger problem for me is how am I going to pay for it. This hobby is EXPENSIVE!

Sometimes people here beat themselves up for months before making a lens choice and other times they just know what they want. Some people even preorder a new lens before the slightest hint of a review comes out. Right now I am beating myself up over an UWA lens pick between the 11-16, 10-18 and 10-22.

Let me know which of your lens choices were slam dunks and which you had a hard time choosing between and what lenses were your secondary choices.

For me here is what I went through in the past.

17-50, 24-105, 60/2.8, 85/1.8 These were slam dunks for me and I didn't really think about other lenses when I bought them

70-200/4 IS - hard choice between that and 70-200/2.8 non IS
135/2 - Hard choice on selling the 70-200/4 IS for the 70-200/2.8 II or just adding the 135/2
30/1.4 non art - Hard choice between that and 28/1.8
50/1.4 - Buy or or wait for updated Sigma art or a new Canon IS version.

How about you?

I do not use my 10-22 lens much...............

The long-term trend is to smaller formats. You may end up with heavy expensive dinosaurs. The new breed of EF-S lenses are not expensive and have excellent IQ.

My mistake was buying the f/4 L lenses for my cropper. I was on the mindset that "these lenses are FF compatible and f/4 is alright because I can always use high ISO and/or flash" Eventually realized that they just weren't good enough so I went with the 17-55 and was finally happy on crop. When I had enough money to go FF, I easily sold off the 17-55 and just replaced it with a 24-70.

As for agonizing over lens choices, I knew what I wanted to buy and bought it but I learned along the way that lens decisions should be based on one's current system/setup and the needs of the individual shooter. While some lenses are really good, they're not for everyone.

All the pros I know are moving to FF when they can. Better image quality, dof and iso performance.

There are so many normal range Canon zooms, it is difficult often to make a decision as to which one to use.

When I was considering the SL1, I had to decide on a normal zoom for it. The new SLM lenses are reportedly very sharp, so that made things a lot simpler. I still had to decide between the 18-55mm SLM and the 18-135mm SLM. My thorough and scientific review led me to decide for the 18-135mm.

But at purchase time, that lens did not come in the kits, and those kits were on sale at quite attractive prices. So I went for the 18-55 plus the 55-250mm, both STM. My disappointment at not getting my first choice lens was compensated for by the very nice increase in range that I ended up with.

Now what about ultrawide? I already have the 10-22, and it is excellent. But it is heavier than the new 10-17mm STM, and doesn't have IS (the STM does). Still thinking about this one.

I knew I was going to get a FF camera eventually, and since canon hasnt announced any plans to change the lens format any time soon, it was a fairly safe future proof investment. :)

Now that I have my FF camera, im able to use all the lenses I have. Didnt need to sell any to get something different.
