Intense hawk cries and squirrel screams caused me to run out to the deck. The commotion came from the top of a tree across the street (about 120 feet away). I saw 2 red-tailed hawks circling the tree and the 3rd one busying himself in the foliage

In the next moment, an adult squirrel charged up the branch. The poor thing must have been really desperate to save the nest to charge a full grown hawk like that! The hawk made a threatening move and the poor squirrel turned around and retreated (look closely and you'll see the squirrel at the lower left corner of the picture, and the hawk on the upper right)

Shortly after, the hawk burst out of the tree with a new born squirrel in his beak.

I know ... it's nature ... but I still feel bad for the squirrel.

(Picture quality is not that great. At this time, my longest lens is the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II. These pictures were taken hand held with the 2X III converter)

Lol NIce Bret, Linh it can seem very barbaric for some to witness I know. Great that you were able to record an advent that you will always remember.

Great catches, Linh, you had to be quick! Hawks must eat too. I've seen 2 sharpies on the ground mantling over a grackle and a blue jay they've nailed in the past 2 weeks right outside my kitchen window, but I wasn't able to get any shots, they're so fast carrying them away. This does seem to a hunting ground for them though, so I'll get some shots yet.

Yes, Ian, I was pretty fast running out to the deck. I grabbed the camera on the way out and realized that only the 70-200 was on. So, I practically put the 2x on while on the run. Once outside, it was a flurry of actions and distractions (with the squirrel charging and the 2 other hawks circling and squawking). I did not realize I got the shot with the new born squirrel until I saw the pictures on the computer later.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

Excellent series. Thank heavens for hawks. If we didn't have them our world would be over run with destructive rodents. My daughter's boyfriend had his Toyota ruined due to squirrels. They chewed through many of the car's wires, cables. It was a write off.

Awesome captures! I gotta say...I'm not feeling sorry for the tree rats.
