I know this is not specifically photography related, but I figure someone on this forum has to know about this based on all the art talent we have here. My daughter is an extremely talented amateur sketch and paint artist and was asking for a possible pen tablet and software for trying her hand and art on the computer. I was wondering what tablets and software I might suggest she look into. She's college-age, so anything at the lower end of the price range might be more realistic for her.

Edit: she's on a Windows 8.1, Intel i5 notebook if that matters.

I have a Trust tablet, which works great, and compared to the Wacom products was about half the price. Pressure sensitive so works great for drawing. I love using it for the times when you actually need to "paint" when editing a photograph. I have no talent for drawing and the like, which is the reason that I became a photographer in the first place. Actually I find the pen much better for art than a mouse. I tend ot use the mouse when adjusting sliders in LR, and then use the pen for local brushes, or when I open PS.

As it is effectively a mouse replacement it will work with any software, although it is better with programs that are pen aware, and so pressure sensitive. I think even MS Paint can make use of that so almost any application that you might use for drawing is good. Mostly I just use PS though.

One option might be to look for a used Wacom, an old Intuos 3 would still be better than a new tablet from an off-brand, a quick search on ebay shows that you can get one for $50-130 depending on size and condition.

The older Wacom tablets are built like tanks, so don't hesitate to buy second-hand; I also prefer the fact that they don't use batteries for the pen, which every other tablet does.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I just picked up an Wacom Intuos small that came with a couple of introduction programs, Sketchbook express and Artrage 3 studio, that I can recommend. I have tried both and they seem to be pretty good for a novice. Just my opinion, I'm no artist.

Some of the old affordable Wacom tablets had names like "Graphire" and "Bamboo" which you may find used or old stock for a steal.

I use a Wacom Bamboo for photo retouching, drawing, etc. They work great and are inexpensive.

Have Fun,
Jeff

Well she waited long enough to buy that her birthday is upcoming. I bought her an Intuos Wacom Small. I wish the price jump wasn't so big between sizes. I'd have spend $125-150 for a medium, but not $250! I spent like 2 hours watching youtube reviews trying to convince myself that one of the cheapies from Ugee or Huion would be good enough, but I just want something that works since it is for her. If it was me, I don't mind tinkering and I'd have bought a big, cheap, Chinese one.

Plus, the Intuos came with a couple half decent apps so it came out to be a very good deal. So thanks everyone (especially A1Original) for the suggestions.
