never noticed on other IS lenses I've owned but there's an audible "Tsss" noise when the IS turns on or off. Is this normal? Anyone else notice this on their copy?

Recent L lenses are really quiet for sure (70-200 II for instance), but if you're caring you can heard that little IS noise. Don't be afraid of it ! 5D² 40 pancake | 50/1.4 | 85L II | 135L | 16-35L IS | 24-105L | 70-200 f2.8 L IS II and a TT bike

I must admit though that the 16-35 IS noise is very distinctly different than other lenses. Edward Jenner

Aug 11, 2014 08:59 | #9 I have never used the 16-35 but my 24-105 makes a ton of IS noise and as far as I can remember every IS lens I have ever used has made some form of noise when you activate the IS. I wouldn't be worried by it. Aaron

I do hear the IS whirring away on my 35 f/2 IS and even that is not particular loud, by most standards its actually pretty quiet. So if I had to take a gander at whether or not you can, if you have sensitive hearing then you probably will hear the IS mechanism on any modern/recently released canon lens. The IS in the 24-105 has never made a peep for me but wow the rented 70-200 f/4 IS was downright annoying with the IS sound (still a great lens, though).
