Not good to be posting after Tim's beautiful shots, as I got nothing good.

Just a breakfast tray... I posted one once before so I'm repeating myself and it's completely boring. But I thought it looked okay in B&W. I took this with an old Fujinon 135mm MF lens, by the way.

The bokeh is so strong that the plate/tray seems to be floating in the air.

.... So I'm glad you started this week's theme with food in its original state, OhLook. These are pretty shots.

Terrific food shots everyone...very impressed with all those vegetables...what a healthy lot you all are...and here's me with an empty winter garden suffering from neglect.

So I found some "food in it's original state" to go with all those vegetables! And this food is eating food....and so the circle of life goes on!

LOL, Richard, that is too cool! But those poor sheepies being called food!:lol: Funny and very original. And of course true as well.

By the way, I hope that my dislike of steaming greasy meat shots won't stop you all from posting them?!!! I'll... you know, just look the other way...  Seriously though!

Sibil, I focus stacked that breakfast tray, which is why it stands out so much.

Stina, your tomato shot is lovely. And I love that the tomatoes are in different states of ripening: green, yellow, orange, red. Really lovely.

I envy all of you with gardens, growing your own vegetables. I'm still not over Tim's shot with the plate full of veggies from his own garden!

Here's an experiment with tomatoes. I made a kind of light box so they were lit from underneath. There's definite room for improvement here but I kinda like it anyway, even though it looks more like an X-ray than an actual photograph! :D

I don't have a garden, my mom needed me to feed her cat, so I stole a picture from her yard. :) I like your take on this theme, I thought of my pig but wasn't sure how that would go over. ;)

Thanks Levina, I realized my food isn't pretty to photograph so I took the easy route.

Levina - good experiment with the tomatoes.

I meant to ask earlier - what software do you use for your B&W photos?

I have always had an interest in close-up / macro photography. Last and this week's topics gave me a chance to practice on it. Below taken with a G11 using late afternoon natural light (which I found is darn hard!). I had no time to setup anything as they were the family dinner, and everyone was anxious to attack the food. :D

Sibil, love the last shot! And it looks delicious. I love feta (well, that's what it looks like).

And thanks, everyone, for the nice words on the X-rayed tomatoes!

Tim, I just use Photoshop. But lately I have begun using alpha channels for certain monochrome images. I select the image, copy it and paste it into an alpha channel. Then copy that and paste it back into the layers panel. The difference with using a Black&White layer adjustment is that the alpha channel often has just that bit more clarity. I wouldn't use this for say, street shots, but for certain still lifes I think it works well. I will work it a bit in the layers panel of course until I have what I think is a good balance between the softness of the tones and the need for a bit of "pop."

Thanks for the explanation. I'm still a novice with Photoshop, but I'll have to try that.

You could also use one of the colour channels (Red, Green or Blue) as a start for a B&W image. And also try out different blending modes and play with the opacity slider.

Wonderful photos, everyone. Images reduced to two after Photobucket's change in terms of service.
Soup.

Whoops, the rising vapor fogged up the lens. Better step back and zoom.

Soup, second attempt.
