My out of warranty 60d has just pooped up with "unable to view" a picture once it's been taken.

Actually the camera is not able to save the shot into the SD card.

Sent it to Canon and got quoted US270 for repairs which is super steep. Anyone with experience of which part to change that I can DIY? I've yet to actually know what is the failure related to from C anon service because I haven't managed to talk to their personnel.

I work in the electronics industry and have no hesitation to mechanically change any part or even perform some software flashing.

I think I would start with flashing the firmware, even if it is presently current. Such an action has been known to fix oddball behavior before and can do little harm.

Just as an aside, you are using a stock 60D, meaning no Magic Lantern? Also, if you are using a grip take it off temporarily.

bannedPermanent ban

Try: grip off, new card, new battery, flash firmware before you spend any money. Lots of used 60Ds on the 'sell' board for about $450.

WARNING: I often dispense advice in fields I know little about!

If you paid with a credit card check to see if you have an extended warranty. My Mastercard "adds on" a period equal to the original warranty. For me that would have meant the camera was covered for an extra year, giving two years in total. One would have been deal with Canon, the 2nd year was deal with a 3rd party repair facility.

Should you go the replacement route, shop around, as $450 used might not be the best deal. The Canon direct website (http://shop.usa.canon.com …d-eos-digital-slr-cameras (external link)) is showing the refurbished 60D body at $431. Unfortunately it is currently shown as out of stock as is most everything by end of summer. But I think Adorama and maybe B&H also sell refurbs with guarantees.

Further discounts from Canon in the form of the Canon Loyalty Program may apply; never hurts to ask!

Card isn't write protected correct?

I think this might help directly answer your questions.
