You hike to the top of a mountain with you camera gear only to have it socked in by fog?

You take a silly picture of a rock formation in the fog...

Then go back the next day for some real pictures...

In situations like this where fog or inclement weather rolls in, I would go in even tighter on the rock (the subject), shooting a specific bit of detail and leave the rest of the weather out of the image. Fog isn't really a thrilling subject, so inclusion with the rock formation doesn't do much (for me, at least).

Are you shooting in RAW or in JPG?

Are you using any filters?

The 2nd shot with the tree has potential, but lacks the detail and clarity of the background that I'd look for in an image.

The 3rd shot is missing a defined subject and doesn't do much for me.

Actually, fog can be the challenging artistic circumstance that gives you the opportunity to create something really unique when others typically go for the "blue sky/sunny day post card" shot you see everywhere. There's nothing wrong with the latter but usually it's nothing very special.

When foul weather rolls in you have an opportunity to create some very moody and atmospheric shots. Consider different viewpoints and fields of view and you can often come up with memorable images.

[Thanks, I consider that in the future]

:) Another thing I might try is using a 2 or 3 stop (0.6 or 0.9) SOFT Graduated Neutral Density filter; if the conditions are right, the filter will define additional detail!

Look forward to more pix!! :D
